Possible to customize keyboard layouts without modifying keyboard?

Finally, in GB my phone has the ability to swipe on the space bar and change to Russian. Only, I'd like to customize that Russian layout to one of my own (Phonetically arranged so that the Russian keys match up best to the English keys because I'm not used to the standard Russian one).

Is this possible? I've seen other posts around the web where it was suggested to download a custom keyboard, but I don't want to do that. I'm willing to do the hacking myself if someone points me in the right direction of where these layouts are stored.

    Thanks DXForums!

you would essentially have to build the keyboard from scratch if you wanted to re arrange the keys. It wouldn't just be xml edits you would have to rework some of the java code that underlies it.

but if you want to try here you can go to start reading up

    t
hat is just the summary and you can go through each one on the left of the screen to find classes and the xml attribute associated with it

yeah but if you want to switch the layout from what is already coded in you'll have to rework the code. Its already coded in a certain way for the keys to show up in certain spots and if I am understanding you correctly you want to rearrange the keys right? those articles should point you to the correct spots.. or you can decompile the apk yourself look through all the xmls and see if each one has a specific spot for each key or key press

edit: you may be able to edit this xml in the picture below not going to guarantee it will work but it does have layout in it
