At this point, I'm almost ready to pull the trigger for verizon's data plan. Can't stand this trial and error stuff. Such a waste of time.

geez, thanks for the help (not)

I got it working just fine, no thanks to you.

I have data manager service 1.0 &1.1, should I freeze both? Also, There's something here called "Data collector provider 1.0", what's that all about (doesn't sound good)?

Look in the system/app folder. There should be only one datamanagerservice.apk. Rename it to datamanagerservice.apk.bak.

Do not mess with any of the other dataxxx.apk files. That will break several things.

@e3zkiel ... That was a bit harsh towards nycebo... wasn't it?

There are many on this forum that are willing to be helpful to those that are not fully knowledgeable about all of the intricacies of this new OS. Personally, I am thankful for that.

This is a help forum.... help being exchanged amongst experts... as well as help being shared amongst others, allowing us all to become more knowledgeable.

The Android OS, unlike its half-brother for servers (*nix) is currently gaining MASS appeal partially because of its openness and HELPFUL forums... and hopefully will continue to gain marketshare.

And if enough users desire tethering and learn from others how to properly do this w/o snobbish remarks... then ultimately the market will drive the capability and eventually it will becomestandard a standard feature... but first, forums such as this must strive to be HELPFUL and accessible to the masses, otherwise the Android will go the way of Betamax, Blu-Ray, OS2, etc...

@snow02 two brief questions. Is there anything else besides tethering that gives a uid of 0 because I do not tether. Attempted it once just after upgrading to 596 to check if it was blocked. I then got rid of the 3 apps I tried. I wear into the database and under usage at irregular intervals there is a uid of 0. It is always one line only but can be from every 10lines to every 30 lines.

Second question is must I delete the database or does renaming work for that kind of file. I do not like doing irreversible things unless neccessary.

    Thanks.

Anything that uses data as root will show up as uid 0. I haven't noticed anything other than tethering that does, but of course it's possible. I have no idea what that would be though.

To recreate the database, just unfreeze datamanagerservice.apk and reboot. It will be automatically generated.

Here is a screenie of the new database generated since I renamed it 30minutes ago. You see the 0 towards the top. I have definitely not tethered. So I guess it's an fyi. Thanks for the help.

Seems to me that just means you have a root app that is using data...

Then how can it differentiate tethering from any other root app? I can see how this helps them pick up who is rooted. But root is not illegal but tethering might be considered theft of service.
