I have had iPhones for three years now. I had the original, the 3GS and now the iPhone 4. Everyone is making a big deal about the grip of death, but that's not an issue for me. My problem is that reception just plain sucks, whether I'm holding it or not; far worse than the 3GS. I also lose my BT connection all the time while in the car. My biggest problem, however, is the crap proximity sensor. My ear hangs on up people no less than 3 times per day. This never happened with the 3GS.
So, screw Apple, I'm switching...
I had an opportunity to play with a DroidX for 24 hours. It's nowhere near as polished as the iPhone, but at least it actually works as a phone. I found the voice recognition feature to be slick. This is something that the iPhone doesn't do well, or at all when you're talking about Nav.
The one thing that bothers me is how choppy the graphics are. It seemed to get slightly better after the phone was on for a while, but moving the apps menu up and down seemed to have serious framerate issues. Sliding web pages up and down was also far worse than the 30+ FPS real-time experience that I'm used to on the iPhone.
I compared the two side by side and the iPhone is far more polished, has a better screen and a cleaner interface, BUT IT DOESN'T WORK AS A PHONE!!
I'm looking forward to having a phone that works, but I really hope the screen lag isn't an issue in the long term. I'm told that 2.2 is much faster.
