I have a fix for quite speaker issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Kinda ....
Okay, I have noticed that when you cup your hands around the speaker it is much louder. So I used some electrical tape and a thin but stiff piece of plastic and tapped it halfway over the speaker cutout on the case. And it worked! More tinkering found that a rounded half tube works even better and compliments the camera hump nicely. The tube was made out of stiff but very thin cardboard from a toy my son just got. Roll it and cut to min size to match the camera hump. Tape on or use rubber cement. It's a temp fix but the object is to deflect the noise back to your ears. And it lets you put your DX on any surface with out compromise. The flap or the tube work better if longer rather than shorter, parallel to the camera hump.

Reason: add pics.
I got my first DX right away on July 15th, and immediately noticed a softer ringer compared to my D1. I was able to download some ringtones and notification tones I liked using Mabilo and Zedge, and those were plenty loud.
I got a replacement DX on Thursday (I had the awesome pixel banding issue!) and it seems to be louder than my first one. I was told my replacement phone was of a newer build, so maybe that has something to do with it and would explain why not everyone is having this problem.
Sorry if this this thought is a repost: IMO, volume is relative to everyone. What some people would consider not loud enough (ringer wise) might be plenty loud for some. Yes, I agree with the seemingly general consensus from people moving from a D1 to a DX that the ringer volume is softer, but for me, the DX ringer is still plenty loud (at least for the environments I'm in).
I would gladly take a fix that boosts the speaker volume so I can listen to music without hooking up external speakers though!
The first phone I had also had a softer then normal ringer and the speaker phone was harder to hear also. The second and third one were much louder. (yup, 3 phones, 1 with screen flicker issue, 1 with defective pixels on the camera and camcorder and now my current one.) I agree with the above post, the current one is a newer build so that may be the difference. Sounds like another problem with the release day/first batch issued phones.....
