CONFIRMED: this is GB, official OTA update (update 4.5.588) but:
Do not ask when it will be released OTA to the masses, we don't know. It appears this is an early RC or late beta that was probably released for final testing and somehow it ended up on my phone for all to enjoy.
We do not know when you will start receiving the OTA update OTA
If you are having problems installing, make sure your file is named "update.zip", not "update.zip.zip", as this seems to be a somewhat common issue
Fezrock has a thread where he aggregated all the relevent links to common questions here
Common GB install questions answered
from EMAD, "I wrote a guide on how to install rooted gingerbread. It's meant to be extremely clear, like its a For Dummies book. http://revengeofthepc.com/2011/dxgbroot/ I have all the downloads (almost) on my server. Not gonna shut it down."
Root UPDATE: By now you all know its rooted. New thread: Droid X Gingerbread 2.3.3 (4.5.588) Install Patch with Root

1KDS has made a great utility that packs the SBF file and a small Linux distro together so everything can do done from a Live CD, nothing to install in Windows, SBF'd back to 100% stock in 7 minutes flat...See about it here:

From Scottpole - Monster 2.3.340 zip to latest gingerbread
NOTE: In GB, it's both volume up and volume down (not search button) to open recovery and the power button selects, not the camera button.
Question: How do I get to data wipe now?
Answer: (thx Mike7143) With the phone off hold the home key and power button. Then the triangle should show. Press both volume up/down keys. You should now be able to use the volume keys to move up and down. Scroll down to something similar to erase/clear data. Select with the power button. When it's done, select the clear cache. When that's done, reboot.
UPDATE, others are reporting getting it over the air (robrowald, kennydied23). I still hold no responsibility for whatever you do with the file.

You need to flash this from stock recovery, not clockwork. Yes, just rename the file to update.zip. Here's how to get into stock recovery:
Power off, hold the home button then press and hold the power button until the android guy with the triangle shows up. Hit the search key, use the volume buttons to scroll down to apply update from sd card and select it with the camera button, it will start the process, takes about 4 minutes, then reboots. If it Bootloops just pull the battery, do the factory reset procedure again, choose wipe data/factory reset this time, then reboot when it finishes...
