Press hard Menu button>Settings>About phone>Status and look @ Battery level.

Or save yourself some time with a widget. Just do a search in the Market for "Battery Widget". There are hundreds to choose from. I like BatteryLife (but I seem to change my mind every week)...

I personally like Battery Indicator. It displays the percentage in the notification bar as opposed to hogging up real estate on my screen. It also uses up almost no resources.

+1 for Battery Indicator - I like having the display in the notification bar (wish it did less than 10% but that is how the phone reads)...
