background date - Should I have that checked to run or should I turn it off?

Data enabled should that be turned on or off?
Data is your 3G data connection... you need it for any internet, facebook, etc.
Background data is giving permission to apps to let them use this connection to recieve periodic updates (status change, etc) while your phone is asleep.
The ability to uncheck both of them is to prevent unnecessary charges and/or save battery life. If you have okay battery life and unlimited data, leave them both checked.
