.spmo files are the photo attachments for your phone book

SPMO OR SpeedView Meta Objects are used by some apps to speed up zoom pan and other pda image manip features. Programs like the gallary will create .spmo files as soon as you bring up the photo on your pda. If however, you delete or remove the photo off your pda (droid in this case) the .spmo file is not deleted. I've removed .spmo files will no ill effects but I don't know if there are other apps that really need them.

    Unhappy spmo files

I stand corrected.... since I have removed all of my photos from the sdcard and had only 15 spmo files and coincidentally had 15 photos remaining in the phone book I naturally presumed that these related. :-(

Can you rebuild the picture from the spmo file? i.e. If the picture has been deleted can you open the spmo and view it?
