Well those apps will take screenshots of THEMSELVES. They don't take screenshots of ANYTHING that is showing on the screen. I think any app can take screenshots of itself if the dev adds the feature. ShootMe and Drocap2 will take screenshots of whatever is on your screen, whether it is your homescreens, an app, a pop up, etc. I think by default no app has this permission because if it was used the wrong way, an app could watch everything you do.

Hmm, I'm trying to do this but I'm having issues with the Android SDK package. It doesn't see my phone or SD card. I've followed the steps provided here as well as the Android SDK setup. Completely new to this so it's entirely possible I've missed something. I know that when I launch the SDK it fails to connect to the site it's trying to reach for updates and packages.

For those of you having trouble taking screen shots, here are a few tips. Open up the notification bar when the usb icon pops up. Check the option for Charge only. Also for the order of installing everything, do it like this: Install drivers and make sure phone is plugged in in debug mode first. Next download the Android SDK files, but do NOT try to install it. Just extract the folder onto your desktop and leave it there. Finally, go to the Java SE Development Kit link and scroll down a little bit. Click the second download button under Java SE Development Kit (JDK) Bundles. This download is the one specific to JavaFX SDK it is the middle download in the category.
After I did it in that order it worked following the instructions.
I also want to note that I tried it first on Windows 7 and it didnt work. I thought it was because I actually tried to install SDK. I tried it again on windows xp using the steps I mentioned above and it worked.

I own both the iPhone 4 and the Droid X. Love the Droid X but find it really hard to believe that all I need to do on the iPhone 4 to take a screenshot is press the power button and the Home button at the same time and I'm done.
Why is this not built into the Android OS??

And all you need to do on the Droid X is root it and install shootme. Then you shake you phone and take a picture. Yay easy!
The moral of the story is that phone companies, even Apple, are mortal and fallible. With best intentions, whey will often fall short of many people's desires and expectations. Apple doesn't want to accept this, so they fight it, and sometimes they come up with ideas that are really great. With Android, any demand that Google fails to meet can be met by the development community if the demand exists.
When you think about it that way, Android is capitalism at work, whereas Apple is a metaphor for state control. Now states can do a good job, occasionally, for a while. But their net effect is to concentrate power in the hands of a few, which inevitably leads to fail. Why? Because a few people, over time, make far poorer decisions than many people.
We Android folks would rather live in a world where it's messy and free and anyone with a better idea can succeed. Apple doesn't get that. Apple has never gotten that. They never will.
When I go into the Androind SDK, the ddms is an MS - DOS Batch File, which doesn't open the Dalvik Debug Manager to take the screenshots.
I have everything downloaded and have followed the instructions, and don't understand why it's not working.
Ideas?
I intend to live forever. So far so good.
