Slick little app for for preserving battery life when using Bluetooth
I have a Bluetooth hands-free car kit. With my old phone (WinMo) I'd leave my Bluetooth on all day and whenever I would enter my car the phone would automatically pair with the hands-free kit. Battery life on the WinMo phone was decent, but not great. I'd use a car charger whenever I was in the car.
With the Droid X, I've learned that battery power can be a precious commodity, and so I've been manually turning the Bluetooth on when I got into the car, and off when I left. It was a bit of a hassle, and sometimes I'd forget (at the expense of battery life). So, I did some searching in the Android Market and found a free app called Bluetooth Power Manager. It's a slick little app that will turn Bluetooth on whenever the Droid X is plugged into a power source, and turn Bluetooth off when the DX is unplugged (like when you leave the car). It also has a setting that gives you the option of making the phone vibrate whenever the BT state is changed.
The app seems to work as described, and now I've been relieved of having to remember to turn the Bluetooth off when exiting my car.
Oh, and I'm not affiliated with the developer in any way...just a happy app user!

I think both the Car Home replacement apps in the market will turn Bluetooth on for you when you dock it..
I use Locale myself, as that way I can set a whole lot of other stuff, like turning GPS on when docked, and off when not too...

I've not noticed any drain from keeping bluetooth on when not in use

Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Bluetooth will drain a battery even if not connected to another Bluetooth device.

I'm sure it does, but I've not noticed it. I get no noticeable gain in battery life if I turn it off. In fact, I had 36 hour battery life this weekend, and never turned off BT or GPS.
