FREE! Working Boot Animation Changer (Root)
Well, after a week or two making my boot animations, I do need to test them all.
Copy/paste, Copy/paste, Copy/paste, Copy/paste, over and over from the sd card to data/local
Rename/reboot, rename/reboot,Rename/reboot, rename/reboot over and over
Not anymore, I found this FREE Boot Animation Changer (there is a donate version, consider it)
Bootanimation Utility - Lite | AppBrain Android Market
Start it, pick import, pick use file explorer and navigate to your BootAni folder on the sd card
I've been writing a script the past week to do this, here's an already packaged app, and if you want or need BootAnis, the links in my sig will get you to one or two nice ones

HarleyDude, wish I had known about this utility two days ago. I liked Live Dmesg Lite, which displays the dmesg file of boot-up messages, and installed it, replacing my stock boot animation.
When I got tired of it, I could not find it in my applications drawer, on GB .602 on the DroidX. So I uninstalled it via the Marketplace, rather than using your built-in uninstall function (because that screen was not available).
It skipped some steps, because the boot animation is now a black screen, after the red 'M' logo. Once it gets to a certain point, after a minute, it loads up Launcher Pro.
Obviously, what I downloaded from the Market was not as safe as your utility, nor as safe as simply copying the zip files into /system/media, using Root Explorer. Any idea what do I need to do to rebuild the chain that runs the DroidX boot animation? The old 5.97M stock bootanimation.zip file is still there, in /system/media, and it contains the several hundred HAL9000 eye still shots that are used to provide the animation during boot-up, but the calling programs must have been changed.
In your explorations, did you come across what the stock chain of executables were, that called the ZIP file?

I downloaded the animation for vortex 2.5. In the op it states its a flashable zip. Will this animation changer work with flashable zips?

negative
but...
if you open the flashable zip, inside is a bunch of files, one is another zip named...
bootanimation.zip.
Take this out and it will install with this utility
