What would you suggest for free texting? I am making the big leap from a cheap flip phone to a really smartphone and didn't get the texting package because I don't currently text, but have friends who send me text messages, to which I would like to be able to reply. Google voice seems like it might be an option, but now I have to give out a new number (also it receives in SMS and converts to email, but does it convert email to a SMS?)
Kik messenger or Handcent fit the bill?

    - quick laugh. it's about the same as going to the website, but it just shows you the pictures. You don't have to wait for things like ads to load so it's alot fasterand less cluttered. Also, you can easily switch to the sister-sites, favorite so far is FAIL Blog.

You guys should check out this new article at Lifehacker about it. Bowie: you can set it based on location, or simply things you do with your phone. So it doesn't have to be time-based, it can go off almost any queues you can think of.

Kik is free but all recipients must have it, also. handcent is still texting, just more people prefer it over stock

KIK can be used if everyone has the app installed unlimitedly (is that even a word) - it is on multiplatforms tho (BB, droid and winmo). I believe when you sign up, you get so many credits to send text msg's to non-kik users and if you run over that it is so much per msg (not sure of what that cost is per msg).

Handcent is a 3rd app that allows customization of the stock test msg'ing app. It uses text's thru your phone plan.

Google Talk is a good choice - almost all phones have IM capabilities and that is a pretty universal app / download for most phones.

Additionally, there is an app call TextPlus ( TextPlus Brings Free Text Messaging to Android | AndroidGuys ) - It claims to have free texting but I would research to be sure.

It's just a very good app and I use it frequently. Try it you'll see how nice the interface is.
I really like what I see with this app but I can't determine how to save the restaurant info to my X. I see Call, Map, Directions, Search From Here, and Send to Friend. None of these save the info. What am I missing?
