The move was probably just to get your post into the correct category on the Forum. As far as souping up your DX it all depends on what you want to do. Here is my 2 cents... for what it is worth (about 2 cents btw):
Read through some of the Forum posts regarding apps to see which ones people like the most. Google search for the top Android apps and read about some of the more popular ones. I've had my phone since August and have probably downloaded 300 or more apps but only use a small fraction on a regular basis. As you become more familiar with the phone you will find that apps that previously didn't appeal to you are now interesting.
Some of the more common things people do to change the phone are loading one of the home screen apps (Launcher Pro or ADW). They have both paid and free versions. A third one someone put me onto recently was Go Launcher. These apps allow you to change how your home screen looks to a greater degree than the stock home screen does. Another change you can make is to purchase Beautiful widgets. It has a large variation of clocks and weather widgets that can make your phone more personal. Down the road you may want to root it as Dustin suggests but do some reading on how and what to do before trying it.
"Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment"
As a beginner I googled top 10 android apps and top 10 android widgets. The search results got me a decent start.
From there a launcher will help you personalize it. I use launcher pro.
Beyond that a rom, which is a step I've yet to take. Go to the screenshot contest part of the site for examples. If you want your phone to be THAT different, that's your next step. Search forums. Read. Study.
