I checked out most of the keyboards on this thread - many thanks to participants. I prefer direct type in (as opposed to auto-suggest) and ended up using MessageEase. I was inclined towards it as a former Fitaly user on the Treo. The fun part of MessageEase is that their game is entertaining and helps you become proficient quickly.

X Lurker
Looks like the posted article is pretty out of date by now.. 10 months in Android time is a long time!
I was using Swiftkey, then Swiftkey X, for quite some time, and swore by it. The prediction engine in Swiftkey X is unbeatable. However, I continued to try other keyboards periodically. The one that actually managed to pry me away from Swiftkey X was Thumb Keyboard: http://goo.gl/7wKei The big innovation with Thumb Keyboard is that it allows you to customize the width and locations of the various keys. This was incredibly helpful to me! In landscape mode, I'd always had a problem with accidentally hitting the period instead of the space bar. With Thumb Keyboard, I was able to make the entire bottom row into a space bar, and move the period up top. In portrait mode, I always had the problem that the buttons were just too narrow. I'd constantly miss them and hit the wrong key. With Thumb Keyboard, I was able to make the buttons 50% wider, which has been an enormous help!
There are some other good customization features in Thumb Keyboard. As for the prediction engine, I don't think that it is quite as good as Swiftkey X. However, it has been adequate enough for me.

I love SwiftKey X since it came out in beta. Then I actually paid money for it.
Swype beats SwiftKey X because I don't need to poke at keys. Swype is great. But then....
Finally, I found FlexT9, which seems to incorporate the Swype functionality along with prediction. I bought and I'm happy with FlexT9.
