Hello ALL,

I am on a Droid X with UNLIMITED DATA.. My wife was given a company provided line with an Iphone 5.

She will be giving me her old Razr 4G device..

What do I need to do to get this device activated on my line to use as my own phone?

I am worried about losing my UNLIMITED data plan..

Also what do I need to do to get 4G activated to enjoy the HIGH SPEED data connection?

let me know!

Thanks!

At the moment you only lose data when you buy a new phone through the upgrade plan which requires a new contract so you won't lose your unlimited. As for activation, I haven't done it for a while but you should just be able to call verizon and have the new phone activated on your account. For that matter you might be able to do it online. And nothing special for the 4G. Once your razr is activated it will know to go 4G when available.

He will need a sim card though, as it's a 4G phone. Just go into a Verizon store and let them know you need it activated and a sim card....they might charge you $10 for the sim, but it won't alter your contract and you won't lose your unlimited data.

You need a sim card on all 4g phones on verizon? I didn't know that. So if I just bought a new phone online I have to go in to get a card before I can activate it?

New phones would likely come with a sim pre installed, you'd just need the sim card number when you call to activate it.

I might be wrong about all Verizon 4G phones needing sim cards, but I know my Nexus and my girlfriend's iPhone 5 both did.

Interesting about the SIM cards. Would the one in it not work since it is his wife's?

That I do not know...I have no Idea if sim cards are transferable between numbers or not. But I imagine Verizon would know!

thanks for the info gents.. The problem is, she is taking her SIM card over to the iphone 5.. well actually alread did.. apparently the iphone 5 did not come with one that or since its company provided no real way to know, much less get ahold of it(iPhone 5 sim)

hmm tho.. THIS HAS me worried.. from the vzw SIM FAQ page..
Answers to FAQs (http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/faqs/VZAccess/4g_sim_card.html)

Can I use my Verizon Wireless 4G SIM card in a 4G LTE device not purchased from Verizon Wireless?
Yes. You may activate any 4G LTE device that has been certified by Verizon Wireless to be compatible with our 4G LTE network, including devices not purchased directly from Verizon Wireless. Simply activate your 4G SIM card on a Verizon Wireless price plan.

so NOW it appears to be that the issue seems to be, HOW to get a SIM card..

Thinking further on that.. I guess even if my wife was able to give me hers that probably woudn't work as her SIM card would be tied to HER #...

I shall dig some more... but if you have any more insight on this, LET ME know.

Nice! This thread came in handy for me too. First time owning a 4g device and I wasn't even aware there were SIM cards involved :D

My s3 came with a sim card. I had to break it out if it's little plastic thingy and insert in the phone. You'll get all the instructions. Don't worry!

Hmm ok. Mine is coming from the Moto site. Maybe they will ship a card. Who knows. Either way it doesn't sound like too much of a hassle.

Can you get to a store tonight? I say just go and tell them you need to activate it on your current plan. They'll probably try to sell you a new data plan. But just tell them you bought the phone and just want it activated. They shouldn't have a problem. If they do call customer service sometimes they are more helpful!

Ok, after some more digging(lotta googling), I found the "REAL SCOOP"

1. You are able to activate your CUSTOMER OWNED EQUIPMENT (thats what verizon calls phones that you buy not from vzw or 3'rd party vendor) AS long as the ESN is clear, i.e. not reported lost or stolen, and verizon doesn't have a hold on it.. i.e. unpaid bills.. so people VERIFY with Verizon that the esn is clear (by calling vzw CS) before buying that phone on Ebay/Craigslist

2. ALL 4G phones REQUIRE a SIM card, they will not work without one( u wont' be able to activate it at all). WHen buyin from VZW or an authorized vzw seller, they will include the SIM card.

3. The good news is VZW will easily replace your SIM card, free of charge at that.. Either visit a CORPORATE owned vzw store and let them know your activating your own equipment(don't let them try to change your plan or upgrade you) and they should not only give you the SIM card free of charge, but they should switch the device for you as well!

The even better news is that you can order a SIM card yourself (free of charge) by going to MyVerizon. simple attempt the switch device process and once you enter the ESN/MEID it should prompt you for the SIM card number and/or give you the option to order your SIM card..

There you have it!

I ordered free ones from the Verizon website and had them in a couple days. My service was never interrupted while waiting for the card and all is good too go. Thanks for the replies!

Your phones that you were planning to switch from continued to work while you were waiting for the delivery of the SIM cards for the new phones?

I didn't want to be without a phone while waiting for the Sim card to arrive in the mail. I contacted customer support and was told that it wouldn't be any problem, and it wasn't. Did this with two phones and both remained in service until I put in the Sim card in the new phones and turned them on, so they could activate. Worked just as the CSR said it would.

Note: To anyone getting a free sim card online when activating a phone, an indirect signature is required for FedEx to leave it. So keep that in mind. Hoping this will help answer any future questions.
