what is ezSBF?
original [TOOL] ezSBF (https://sites.google.com/site/motosbf/) (not for 2.3.4)

Don't let the word Linux scare you, this is just a cd you burn, nothing installs to your pc. Once you burn this CD you are ready to SBF flash anywhere you have a computer, no net connection needed to download any files.
This is an .iso file. It is a complete Linux operating system that you will download, burn to CD (or USB) then boot your pc from CD or USB, this allows your pc to reboot into a different operating system.

Instructions (Mac):
Download .iso
Use Disk Utility (built in) to burn iso file to a CD (instructions (http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20060619181010389))
Shut computer down
Hold c key, push power and hold c until you see the Linux OS start
Hit enter at the yellow "boot baby... boot" screen
You will see yellow dots for 3-5 minutes then the script will start

Instructions (Windows):
Download .iso
Burn iso image to a disk (Instructions, win 7 (http://www.7tutorials.com/burning-iso-or-img-disk-images-windows-7)) - Vista and XP (http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning+ISO+Images+with+ImgBurn))
Reboot PC
Hit F12 (sometimes F8 or esc) during boot to go to boot menu (possibly google search how to boot your specific pc from CDROM)
Select boot from CDROM (or USB if you used a flash drive)
Hit enter at the yellow "boot baby... boot" screen
You will see yellow dots for 3-5 minutes then the script will start

Live USB Instructions (Windows):
(Instructions from pendrivelinux.com (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/using-unetbootin-to-create-a-live-usb-linux/))(thanks)
Download (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-windows-latest.exe) UNetBootin for Windows
Download your favorite Linux ISO
Double click the Unetbootin Executable to start the program
(1) Click the Diskimage radio box
(2) browse to select your ISO
(3) Set your target USB drive
(4) click OK to start the creation

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-FrR7dRhsc0M/TmFqMvFhL3I/AAAAAAAAAVE/Jd6E-101cCY/unetbootin-live-usb-iso.png

(5) After the USB drive is done select reboot.
(6) During boot enter the boot menu and change USB to boot first, save and reboot.
(7) When booting from UNetbootin select SliTaz

if cd/usb flash drive is made correctly you will not have Droid_X_621-ezSBF-and-RootCD.iso or Droid2_D2G_DX_DX2-RootCD-2012.iso on cd
you will have a folder named 'Boot'
with two files and a folder in the boot folder

usb flash drive may have a few more files

27114
Hit enter at the yellow "boot baby... boot" screen

You will see yellow dots for 1-3 minutes then the script will start

Toggling "USB Debugging" on/off didn't work for me, but I tried a different USB port on my computer (when you're stuck at that message, it's still ok to unplug it and replug it in), and it worked fine for me with no errors. As mentioned in the original, it guides you through all the steps except how to get to clearing cache from the triangle/android screen (both volume buttons, clear cache, reboot). Thanks to the OP for the rooting instructions.

If you already rooted using the milestone method then no you wont need this. This is just an alternative way to root without having to go through all that. Did you flash the .621 kernel back to your phone after sbfing it to .604?

i was wondering if this is the most up to date method to rooting droid x on .621 build?
and is it still reffering to using a linux based o.s. like Ubuntu?

GoCliffGo05

This is the only direct root method for .621. There is another but it requires you to SBF to .604 milestone.

And no you don't need to be on a Linux machine (if that's what you're asking?)

Everything works as said till my phone is supposed to reboot twice.
It gets to a screen that says something like "your phone should reboot" and at the bottom it says "waiting for device".
Then nothing happens. I tried to reboot by using the power button but that just shuts the screen off. Pressing it again brings the bootloader screen back up. I then tried what I saw in a previous post of removing the battery. But when the battery is reinstalled, the phone just loads to the bootloader screen again and nothing happens. This is my first time rooting and im sorry for the inconvenience. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Alright, so something I didnt notice until this morning... I now have superuser.
This made me question if I was rooted or not. So I tried the app RootChecker as well as using a terminal to comfirm a # indicating root.
Both said that I was rooted. I even tested out a root exclusive app and it worked. My questions is, how is this possible?
I never made it to the twice reboot and I NEVER did the volume buttons at android andy. I didnt even get to the point of seeing android andy.
Im happy that I'm now rooted and extremely thankful to sd_shadow. My major concern is that something is not right. If both the app and terminal say im rooted and I can use root exclusive apps, does that mean that everything went right? Or is it more likely that something didnt quite work, and I stand a high chance of bricking my phone?
Sorry for the overdrawn question. Just concerned. As always, any help is appreciated. Thanks

Reboot your phone. If it still has root when its back on then I'd say you are good to go. It must have worked somehow or you were already rooted somehow? I don't know but I wouldn't question it. If all root apps are asking for SU permission then I'd say you are all set to move on to ROMing or whatever else you would like to do.

Hi,

I am getting an error when I first boot from the burned disc image (after 30 seconds of 'Boot Baby Boot .....'):

No PnP or PCI devices detected. Would you like to use a legacy ISA sound card/chips? (Yes/No)

I cannot select either to move past this screen. Any thoughts appreciated!

Resolved:

I found that my problem was my headset (Siberia v2 with USB sound card). Unplugging it enables keyboard to function.

I was stuck at daemon screen. As aforementioned in thread, reconnect USB cable to initialize.

Thanks guys,

Is there a need to do the a kernel and wifi libraries update with this flash method?
Original source: http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-general-discussion/45783-important-info-621-update.html.

I ask because when I tried, I could not boot.
-Wiped data
-Wiped cache
-Wiped Dalvik cache
-Formatted system
-Installed kernel and wifi lib with no wiping in between.

No if you are on .621 and use this method for root there is no need to touch the kernel or any of that.

How this works

Droid2_D2G_DX_DX2-RootCD-2012.iso (http://www.mediafire.com/?mim304k214kl41h)

burn image to cd with imgburn (http://download.cnet.com/imgburn/3000-2646_4-10847481.html), (Instructions, Window 7 (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/548-burn-disc-image-iso-img-file.html) - Vista and XP (http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning+ISO+Images+with+ImgBurn))
or flash drive use UNetBootin for Windows (Instructions from (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-windows-latest.exe)pendrivelinux.com (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/using-unetbootin-to-create-a-live-usb-linux/))

basically read onscreen directions

Thank you! The onscreen directions were utterly complete...for once, it was unnecessary to practically memorise the posted directions before embarking on the process.

On the other hand, UNetBootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-windows-latest.exe) is not so thorough in its on-screen documentation--but it is more flexible than it lets on. The only media I had handy for this job (aside from dual-layer DVD-R's that I didn't want to waste on a 55MB iso) was a disused 2GB microSD card--but it worked perfectly. First, I tried the microSD card in a thumb drive that accepts multiple flash media, but my laptop wouldn't boot from that...so I dug up the full-size SD adapter and stuck into the SD slot on my laptop...

To boot from microSD:

Format your microSD card
Start UNetBootin
Select disk image Droid2_D2G_DX_DX2-RootCD-2012.iso
Select Hard Drive, not USB Drive
Select the drive letter for your SD card
Hit OK and wait until it's done
Reboot and enter Setup (F2 on my laptop)--not Boot (F12)
From Setup select the Boot menu and move Removable Media to the top of the list
Reboot and select UNetbootin (that's the name UNetBootin gives to the installed image)
Just follow directions from there.
Thank you for all the handy links, too. I had never used UNetBootin before; I wonder if 2GB is big enough for Ubuntu?

Trying to root my Droidx as a newbie, downloaded imgburn, burned img to cd, pressed F12, got one time boot, selected cd drive, WINDOWS STARTED? Re-did all steps, Windows started, checked img is on disc, looks OK, I don't know what's happened but I can't get bootbabyboot. Any suggestions? Woe is me, woe is me.

Uninstalled imgburn, got copy from cnet, redid image burn, we'll see what happens now.

Good news! I re-installed imgburn with a version from cnet, made another img with a fresh disc and everything worked like a charm, yeehaa. I have the superuser icon in my apps, now I have to do some searching on how to turn on the wifi hotspot for my airplane trip on Wed. if you want to flash a rom or make a nandroid backup you need
ClockworkMod Recovery (cwm) to get that you need

custom recovery cannot be installed instead of the stock recovery. The only way to run it is by hijacking the boot process (for stock ROMs) or providing an option in the bootup process of a custom 2nd init-based ROM.To install CWM on DX, you need to:

Root the device
Install Droid 2 Recovery Bootstrap (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.droid2.bootstrap)
Open Droid 2 Bootstrap Recovery
Press Bootstrap Recovery; the application should pop up a message about a successful installation
To update to the most current version (which lets you freely use .tar images you might have created with MIUI/Cyanogenmod's bundled CWM):

Get ROM Manager (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager) from the Market.
Start it, and choose the first item, Flash ClockworkMod Recovery.
Choose DROID X (2nd-init) (this is important).
Grant Superuser privileges when asked to.
don't use Droid X bootstrap

I'm going to try barnacle wifi right now, I'm still learning the language so I get confused sometimes on the sequence of suggestions, from your last post I understood that first I need to install Droid 2 bootstrap recovery and then get rom maanager in order to get flash clockworkmod recovery? These steps will allow me a backup for my system in case something goes wrong?

OK, barnacle wifi worked great after I fooled with a bit, but hell, that's half the fun! So, I've been out of the DX for a while and on to the Razr. Just rooted my wife's X that is on .621 tonight. Thanks to the help here it wasn't as painful as I thought it would be. I have not installed CWM or Rom manager to make an nandroid backup. She's not planning on flashing ROM's or anything, just wanted to get rid of bloatware, etc.

1. Do I need to do the backup or can I simply do an SBF if needed?
2. Since I don't see any more OTA updates coming for the X would it be safe to actually delete the bloatware rather than just freeze it?
3. Would I just be smarter to put her on a blur based rom that is deodexed?

Thanks everyone.

GoCliffGo05
11-20-2012, 09:21 PM
1. Backups are recommended for easy restore but like you said you can always SBF.
2. You can delete things but freeze things if you don't really know what they are (system files or actually phone parts.) And make sure the phone still works OK. If you delete something that was critical you can always SBF to get things back.
3. I would put her on Wizards GB MIUI. Always hear great things about it and it runs very well.

I figured I would just delete the junk games, blockbuster, and such. What is the proper way to sbf now? I did it back when my X was on .605, and running Vortex, but not sure if I need something different if I did it with the utility in the OP.

Heck, I didn't pay that much attention when I ran the utility...is it an option after I boot up into linux?

GoCliffGo05
11-20-2012, 10:08 PM
I'm assuming you used the 1KDS linux method to SBF before? .621 is a little different. The only way to use the 1KDS linux method once on .621 is to use the .604 utility. This will put you on milestone firmware. You will then have to flash the Verizon kernel back. Or, the easiest way for .621 IMO is to just use the .621 SBF file and RSD Lite.

sd_shadow

try MD5 Checker (http://download.cnet.com/md5-checker/3000-2092_4-10410639.html) it's a little simpler, use to verify the hash/checksum to ensure the file integrity is correct with the matching file.

The MD5 checksum for a file is a 128-bit value, something like a fingerprint of the file.

Why would it be bad but still work for other people? that's why you use md5 checksum, to verify that the file downloaded correctly

just wonder if this will kill ANYTHING that is on this unrooted Droid X? We have MyBackup Pro v 3.2.5 now, but am not sure if it is saving everything as the phone is not rooted now.

Well, I saw a post on this forum saying something about the first thing to do after rooting is to create an image that can be put back if needed. It said to use droid x bootstrapper or droid 2 bootstrapper. We have the Droid X but it seemed to imply that I should use droid 2 bootstrapper.

I guess I need to read more postings. It would be nice to see what that is and if it creates an image where we could go back if needed!.

GoCliffGo05
11-30-2012, 08:26 PM
Yea you want D2 Bootsrapper for backups. That will create an "image" of your phone exactly how it is when you run it and can be used to restore to that point in time if needed. Titanium is just for apps and such. For example if you were on stock and wanted to save all your app data, you would root, install Titanium, Backup, Flash the ROM then restore the User Apps + Data.

sd_shadow
11-30-2012, 08:39 PM
use the d2 boostrap, the dx bootstrap only worked with 2.2 froyo versions

EllenR
11-30-2012, 08:56 PM
Thank You both....

I am told that rooting will not hurt the apps and data. We have MyBackup Pro so I guess I do not need Titanium.

However, I guess you are all saying that I should root, and then install Droid 2 Bootstrapper (even though we have a Droid X). When run, I will have an image we can always revert to. Can this be restored even if the phone is messed up to the point of not booting? Also, we still have a stock ROM and had not planned on changing that.

GoCliffGo05
11-30-2012, 09:14 PM
It will create a "Nandroid" backup and place it on your external SD Card... If your phone is soft-bricked to the point of not being able to boot then no you will not be able to restore it directly. What you can do is SBF the phone out of the brick, root, install D2 Bootrapper and then restore the Nandroid so you don't have to start from scratch with everything.

If you want to stay on stock then that is an option, in my opinion a ROM is always the way to go, but obviously it is a personal preference.

Just wanted to mention that this root process works well, and it's kinda exciting when it all comes to fruition. I read over the steps multiple times, and bam, my old droid X is now rooted and ready to be rom'd. By the way, chicks dig talk of rooting and rom'ing! ha ha!

One question, I kinda thought that Droid 2 Bootstrap and Clockwork Recovery performed the same functions...but it seems by this thread, both apps are good to have and each serve a different purpose. Can someone here explain in more detail?

Thanks again guys!

custom recovery cannot be installed instead of the stock recovery. The only way to run it is by hijacking the boot process, that is what bootstrap does
rom manager, does not have the hijack, but can Update ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) from 2.0.0.x to 5.0.0.x
this allows you to restore nandroid backups made from 2nd init roms
more info in my list, look for installing d2 bootstrap @

Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-g1282440 mcbk83@il93lnxdroid08 #1

I have read the entire thread (a couple of times) and before I start, I have a question: I have downloaded MD5 & SHA-1 to my Windows 7 PC. When, and how (step by step, PLEASE!), do I run (i.e., use) MD5 & SHA-1?

FWIW, the reason I am rooting my phone is that I am going to ditch Verizon and switch to Page Plus. I can live with 3g as I use my phone for calls, texting (work), a little bit of web browsing, and streaming music. I do not watch vids, play games, take lots of photos, etc.,

Droid X, and 4.5.621 (unfortunately). I've tried this root method a few times, including after doing a factory reset, but still not working. The checksum matches. I've tried both charge only mode and PC mode (saw no difference). I've tried disconnecting the phone as suggested (even though it didn't appear to have that problem).

This latest attempt, I recorded the last part of the output to read the first error messages before they scroll away. The first sign of trouble I think appears at the "Rooting Phone" stage. right off the bat, I get "mount: Operation not permitted". And after that, obviously nothing works right.

some of what showed up (perhaps this'll at least help future searchers):

failed to copy 'files/su' to '/system/bin/su': Read-only file system
Unable to chmod /system/bin/su: No such file or directory
failed to copy 'files/Superuser.apk' to '/system/app/Superuser.apk': Read-only file system
... and so on ...
busybox: /system/xbin/zcip: Read-only file system
failed to coyp 'files/local.prop' to '/data/local.prop': Permission denied
Unable to chmod /data/local.prop: Operation not permitted
Unable to chmod /data/local.prop: Operation not permitted
mount: Operation not permitted
If you saw no errors,...

any ideas? Over the weekend, I'll start from scratch again (factory reset, new download, new CD, different computer)... but I'm not particularly optimistic after what I've already tried.

the reason for disconnecting usb, is to prevent rebooting to bootloader after that part is done, or to manually reboot phone twice because program is not rebooting it twice after flashing in bootloader

wipe cache before trying again

Hey guys I come with problems!:disappointed: I'm not feeling to optimistic. During my X root after powering on phone to bootloader, pressed enter and my operation froze there. Screen said "Phone should reboot ..... and phone said SW update, in progress". So I pulled battery for the reboot, only now my phone says,
Bootloader
30.04

Code Corrupt
Battery OK
Ok to Program
Connect USB
Data Cable

Do I take the award for bricking my X or can I be saved? I tried power button and hard home button for factory reset only I get this screen.
Some help is very appreciated:cry:

Looks like an sbf is needed to save you, code corrupt tells me that something went wrong with the software. Make sure you use the stock motorola usb cable and do the sbf. The DX is for the most part, impossible to brick.

after flashing sbf, wiping data (in Android Recovery) is recommended, may even to necessary if phone bootloops,
should at least wipe cache

Android Recovery: with phone powered off,
press and hold home button, then press your power button,
hold till you see a triangle on the screen w/ android andy,
then press both volume buttons

scroll with volume buttons, select with power button

Do I have to install an app to tether wirelessly?
I thought the fcc ruled in september that verizon should allow us to tether. I know details go deeper than that but I'm wondering if I can't just use whats installed on my phone instead of downloading an app to do so.

I think that is true, but there has not been a software update to fix, and motorola/verizon are not going to make one
I haven't used tethering much
think there is a couple options, barnacle app, open garden app, and tbh tether patch (WugPacked GB Tether Patch [All-In-One Zips] (http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/gingerbread-development-hacking/30948-wugpacked-gb-tether-patch-all-one-zips.html))

Hello everyone. I have a issue, and I'm not sure how to proceed, hopefully someone here can help me out.

My phone was rooted, but otherwise stock, before the 621 update. Since the update, my phone now boots to CWM whenever it powers on. Does CWM actually still work, or do I need to get root back first? If I need root back first, can I use this method or do I need to get rid of CWM first? Thanks!

sd_shadow

did you have vovdoo ota rootkeeper?
try installing root basic (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck&feature=search_result), or try updating superuser binaries

sd_shadow

if still have superuser, uninstall it
and use this root method

No Voodoo. I do still have SU but any app that needs SU fails. So, I assume that when the it goes to reboot, I just choose reboot from the CW menu, if it still asks, and all will be good?

Thanks for replying so quickly..I was afraid this thread was dead.. :)

Hi,

noob here. I don't have a dX but have a D2 R2D2 on 2.3.4 (622). My phone is now rooted after getting the 2.3.4 OTA a while back. I found phifc method on XDA and got it rooted. I have TIBU/TIBUPro, RomMgr, d2 Bootstrap and BusyBox on my phone right now.

This is what I did and would appreciate further assistance in ensuring my phone stays rooted and to be able to revert back to stock without loosing data/settings/apps. Thanks

I rooted, downloaded ROM Mgr TIBU free and busy box (maybe busybox, or it came on the image disk..i forget). Some instrux for noobs like me from XDA forum told me open Rom Mgr and flash cw recovery for my device. I did not know, nor was told to get D2 Bootstrap at that time.
After I had flashed CWmod recovery, I then downloaded D2 Bootstrap and ran that and then reflashed CWMod recovery because I didnt know I needed D2 bootstrap..is that ok?
Also, I did it stating that Moto Droid 2 was my device not DX..is that a problem and how to fix if need be? as simple as flashing CWM again but as DX?

Do I need to backup my EFS file?
How do I backup my EFS file and which app is preferred if available?

Thank you,

Erik

I saw the google doc on the bootstrap...I just wanted to make sure that I didn't mess things up by doing what I did in that sequence and for selecting Droid 2 as the device instead of DX as you state in that google doc. thanks

sd_shadow
01-30-2013, 03:31 PM
for D2, D2G, R2D2, and DX, you need to install D2 bootstrap then,
to select DX 2nd init recovery (in Rom Manager), so that its compatible with 2nd init roms

lokewolf
01-30-2013, 03:54 PM
Then backup stock ROM via CWM?
If that is correct, would it be advisable to backup EFS file (is there an app to do this?) as well as apps on phone (can use Titanium Backup Pro)..correct? thanks

sd_shadow
01-30-2013, 04:01 PM
I recommend making a nandroid backup after rooting, and before any major changes
I have never used Encrypting File System, so not sure
titanium backup pro is a very usefully app, I use it every time I install a new rom

lokewolf
01-30-2013, 04:15 PM
"Reboot into Recovery" in CWM (Rom Mgr) or "backup current ROM"?

sd_shadow
01-30-2013, 04:17 PM
ok you asking about /efs folder?

This is a very sensitive system folder that contains Phone-specific information such as the IMEI (encrypted in the nv_data.bin), wireless devices MAC addresses, product code (also in the nv_data.bin), and much more. Often users trying to change product codes or trying to unlock the mobile will end up corrupting data in this location.
I think that it is untouchable, because of the locked bootloader, I have never had a problem, and have flashed roms/sbfs a hundred times on D2, D2G, DX2 and D3

lokewolf
01-30-2013, 04:24 PM
You hadn't gave info on EFS folder for backing it up, but you directed to make a backup (nandroid). So reading your google doc it says "tap on Reboot Recovery" so I just wanted to be crystal clear on what you meant and what I see in Rom Mgr (CWM). thanks

sd_shadow
01-30-2013, 04:33 PM

edit; rom manager is not cwm recovery, it is an interface to cwm

lokewolf
01-30-2013, 04:42 PM
oh yeah...recalling the other option on the bootstrap app...to recover..
good to know about Rom mgr and cwm. So did I gaff by using Rom Mgr to flash cwm recovery?

sd_shadow
01-30-2013, 04:45 PM
no rom manager, should work fine, I prefer booting to cwm
normally if I'm making a backup it 's before wiping and flashing a rom, all done in cwm

edit; added Open D2 bootstrap as first step, in my instructions, see how that could be confusing

lokewolf
01-30-2013, 04:52 PM
You are being a big help to myself as well as many others that I've seen on this board and on others...Thank you!:big smile:

So do you recommend I do the bootstrap again, but for DX not D2 and also the same for flash cwm to recovery in Rom Mgr? or just do everything again thru bootstrap app as DX not D2? thanks.. Will check back later tonight or in the morning...signing off from work

is it safe to use Rom Mgr to download Roms like CM7 and then install from the SD Card?

you not reading the direction correct
you only use virtual box, if you are not putting it on a cd or usb flash drive

Instructions (Windows):
Download .iso
Burn iso image to a disk (Instructions, Windows 7 (http://www.win7articles.com/burn-iso-images-in-windows-7.html) - Vista and XP (http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning+ISO+Images+with+ImgBurn))
Reboot PC
Hit F12 (sometimes F8 or esc) during boot to go to boot menu (possibly google search how to boot your specific pc from CDROM)
Select boot from CDROM (or USB if you used a flash drive)
Hit enter at the yellow "boot baby... boot" screen
You will see yellow dots for 3-5 minutes then the script will start

edit: they are two totally separate instructions

the oracle virtual box instructions says

find Droid2_D2G_DX_DX2-RootCD-2012.iso on hard drive,
so why would you put it on a cd?

I definitely followed the directions..I know how to burn a disk on windows 7. I know how to access a computer boot menu also. The disk is not working at all, it says booting [achi] disk drive image, then the screen goes black and it moves on to booting windows. I did follow the directions, I chose to follow the directions with using a disk though. Unetbootin has never worked once for me ever despite the 5 times I've tried to use it to make OS install usbs. I'm not even going to bother with that. The last option I had was use oracle virtual box, which was messed up. I think the iso file I downloaded must be junk or something. The Virtual box option was the farthest I've come so far, it was updating firmware when all the info (the rooting program saying things like "accessing phone, waiting for phone..etc" was eradicated, and I was left with a completely blank virtual box screen. I tried pressing keys and moving the mouse which did nothing. Sorry for being a bit snooty, but I don't like it when people tell me I did something wrong, and I hate it when things like this that should be so simple never work in the end. Now what suggestions do you have for me to try now that you see the massive clustery mess I'm in with this phone. Anyone feel free to help. Again sorry for being rude, I love these forums and I never would offend anyone.

alienware laptop should be able to boot cd
most likely you didn't burn correctly
if you open cd, it should have to a root folder with some files in it, i
if you still have the iso file, you burned it wrong

in the bios you can edit that... to give you more time to hit f12... so that's not an issue....

I'm not familiar with your PC but it may be your boot from CD isn't enabled on your PC. Like nemo said its in the BIOS of your PC. It could be f8 first to get you to the BIOS to first enable it then you will be able to push f12 for bootmenu to boot the disk just my thought hope this helps

the program needs to flash 2 files in bootloader, then it will reboot phone
if phone reboots to bootloader, disconnect usb cable and manually reboot phone
but do not disconnect phone until files are flashed

you may need to flash 2.3.4 sbf

just pull usb cable, pull battery, wait 5-10 secs, reinsert battery, press power, when phone has rebooted, reconnect usb data cable

edit: if it reboots to bootloader again, repeat above steps

actually once magic md5 is pushed, and files flashed in bootloader
phone should be rootable with zergrush, petes root tools, or similar root method

so confused, I need some help pls. I haven't done anything to my droidx since I got it, ive had it for a long time and its extremely slow to say the least. mostly I want to be able to use my phone at the hospital to look up drugs and other information via relevant apps (a task that took longer than having a student run to another floor, get a book, run back, and search through the book for the answer). From my readings here so far this is what I know / what ive done:
- my phone = droid x 4.5.621.MB810,
- I've backed up all my contacts to google contacts, uploaded all my pics to my computer, erased all nonessential apps
- I have downloaded the last link on this page (https://sites.google.com/site/motosbf/droid-x-sbf-files)for the droid X SBF 4.5.621 file - downloaded RSD lite 5.7 - downloaded Motorola drivers and put all 3 (sbf/rsdlite/motodrivers) in a folder on my computer, I understand this is needed if i wish to return the phone back to its pre rom / modded state
- Ive downloaded the root only Droid2_D2G_DX_DX2-RootCD-2012.iso from the OP of this thread, and understand how to execute the instructions (I'm on a windows 8 computer)

now I have several questions:
1. do I need a program for nandroid backups and restores? I don't see why if I have the sbf file that i can just go back to...
2. I was reading the thread at a pretty fast pace until the talk about roms (post 213,218,219) what is all this? and if it is what i understand it to be (like putting Ice cream sandwich onto an android tablet) then how would one know which is the best / how to try it without constantly changing it on your phone?
3. besides downloading the sbf for backup then running the root only as per this thread what else is needed (how/where to load a rom? / is it good to make a nandroid backup?) basically is there something else I need to do.

I'm really determined to speed up my phone (takes a good 20 seconds after i hit call for the phone to dial) and actually use the medical apps I put on it, but like an idiot I feel like I need to know everything before I do it and this stuff seems to only keep getting more technical. any help will be greatly appreciated!!

you don't need to flash SBF, if you want to install a rom

1. read [HOW TO] Install/Use Droid 2/X/3 Bootstrap

(https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ds6tlVHsAy9ZwkswQ8OZdclJRfd3YPXVSQBc0ofsZQE/edit#)2. they are custom roms, they replace the stock software
Pooka's CM7 (http://d-h.st/NB1) is likely the most complete MIUI DefX by Wizard0f0s (http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/miui/46049-miui-defx-wizard0f0s.html) is also good
your phone has 2.3.4 gingerbread,
cm7 miui are android 2.3.7 gingerbread,
roms By Dubbsy (http://rootzwiki.com/user/115389-dubbsy/) are ice cream sandwich 4.0x, still some features that don't work

3.make a nandroid backup with clockworkmod recovery, before flashing a new rom
instructions here [HOW TO] Install/Use Droid 2/X/3 Bootstrap
(https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ds6tlVHsAy9ZwkswQ8OZdclJRfd3YPXVSQBc0ofsZQE/edit#)a nandroid will restore your system back to the exact way it was when you made the backup.
good idea to backup apps with titanium backup, if they have any data/settings you want
make sure you contacts are backed up read backing up contacts (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Goawxdx_UBF4Y8lqzHYWf8Ha3yUcRK4faq0UWIlXLWA/edit#bookmark=id.32vtxcng13r4) if you are not sure

I have not done anything yet, just reading more and more things but I think im at the point where im reading past what I need to really. I'm going to root in a few minutes after I read through the posted links. I will edit this post when / after every step I complete, as of now I have only downloaded files and my very next step is to root the phone.

edit #1: rooted phone successfully, worked out for me exactly as written!

edit #2: installed Droid X Bootstrapper 621 MOD and successfully made a backup, seemed very easy as well...

edit #3: seemed important to install call log backup and restore and sms backup and restore and save sms and call logs to sd skipped installing titanium backup as I really don't have that many apps (yet) I will install once I lock down some apps on the new rom

edit #4: downloaded and installed Pooka's CM7 very quickly! nice to see a blank slate on my phone and that verizon's stuff is all gone,

edit #5: google play and user accounts is gone so I have to add it back from here (http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip) (goo.im/gapps) after I reinstall Droid X Bootstrapper 621 MOD to go to recovery (I think theres an option to get into recovery by powering down so maybe i didnt need to reinstall it)

edit #6: then i will be adding back contacts, text and call log history. Only new thing left to do is install some rooted apps maybe overclock i think that means a little more reading.

Thanks guys I really really appreciate all the help, the guides were as impeccable as your response time to my post amazing all the way!!!

I have downoladed Droid_X_621-SBF-and-RootCD.iso and, using Virtual Box, have created a VM using the .iso. It is asking me:
1. Flash MB810 2.3.4 SBF
2. Root your phone
3. Shutdown
Questions:
1. Shouldn't I do some kind of backup first - in case?
2. All I want to do right now is to root the phone (May want to install a ROM/theme later) so should I select option 2.
3. Does option 3 mean to shut down the VM or the phone? - Do I choose that when option 2 completes?

MANY THANKS.

backing up before rooting is a good idea, although rooting is fairly safe
option 1 is only used if phone is not working correct
only need option 2 to root,
option 3 shuts down pc, if booting from cd/usb

edit: contacts should be synced with google, verify that
call log and texts can be backed up with sms backup +
limited to what else can be backed up, till rooted

Panic time??
I have started the root and there appears to be a problem. I do not want to continue without help.
I set my phone's USB mode to PC Mode (because "Charge Only" did not work.) and selected option 2. Then, when asked to do so, I powered down the phone and brought boot loader and pressed enter. A bunch of stuff came up on the screen which seemed OK, but then with the phone still in boot loader, I got a screen very much (but not exactly) like the first one asking me to select between the three choices so again I selected 2 to root the phone.

As of now, my phone has not rebooted but the screen is saying:
Let your device fully boot up
Settings > applications > development USB debugging (be sure it is checked)
Connect USB Cable and select charge only
If charge only does not work try PC mode
Press enter to continue

Should I disconnect the USB cable and power down and reboot my phone or what?

Thanks so very much for your help.

edit: Perhaps I should add that the phone has remained in bootloader for over 30 minues since the above screen was first displayed.

by now root program should have timed out.
likely need to start rooting over
after files a flashed in bootloader, program tries to reboot phone, if that fails, just disconnect usb cable, pull battery, replace battery, reboot, wait for phone to fully reboot, connect usb, program should find phone, and reboot it again

I just rooted two DXs, one just before Framaroot method was released using ezSBF and root CD and the other using Framaroot (the data port was malfunctioning so one click was only option obvious to me). Framaroot worked but, interestingly, QuickClock hangs during initial run (always at "installing profiles") on the Framarooted phone. I've cleared cache and Davlik cache, uninstalled and reinstalled, and etc. with no success (even tried changing permissions). Haven't tried other OC methods that cost money yet...I may (Tegrak wouldn't identify the kernel).

Main point of this post is to illustrate that the two methods may not produce the same results...but I can't speak with any authority in any way.

Can anyone repeat this error with the DX, or, rather, has anyone used Framaroot on the DX and sucessfully OCd afterwards?

Much thanks to sd_shadow (tell me how to donate a few $ and I will).

sd_shadow

several things could cause Quickclock to malfunction
could be related to the data port problem, framaroot, sd card...
have you tried wiping data in recovery?

I haven't overclocked for awhile because battery life is bad enough.
I didn't think quickclock worked with 2.3.4, maybe someone else has an idea.

Magic md5 root was created for the D2 by phifc (http://rootzwiki.com/user/111210-phifc/), based on root methods used on other devices, and exploits found by DjrBliss (http://vulnfactory.org) (Dan Rosenberg)
The original ezSBF was created by 1kds (https://sites.google.com/site/motosbf/), bhigham (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1701862) modified it for magic md5 root and updated it to 2.3.4 sbf
I helped test some of the versions, and help troubleshooting.
so you should consider thanking them too, but if you want to buy me a beer/coffee that would be fine, just pm me for my paypal email

Hello every body,
A month ago I received an Droid x phone (MB810A).
I recharged battery outside.
It has bootloader 30.04 version.
Phone was stuck in system recovery menu.
I downloaded .621 sbf and
I got in bootloader menu
I successfully flashed it using rsd, command in linux and this DX ezSBF livecd
I have done wipe data and also wipe cache (these are in system recovery menu).
I also restarted two times....
After each above it restarts in system recovery menu.
I do not know how to restart it normally.
Somebody advised me that could be a hardware problem - but the phone starts well in system recovery menu.
I have red many forums some of the users succeed others not. Are there some procedure?
I need help - step by step.
Thank you.

If you flashed sbf and wiped data, problem is hardware failure, and there is no fix.
