I am a Droid Charge owner. Recently got into the world of rooting (2 days ago) and I LOVE the results. My girlfriend has a Droid X. She wants it rooted.

I was able to find a very easy tutorial for my Charge and have now rooted it, And flashed Tweaked ROM.

I have not been able to find that for the DX. I have found what appears to be a VERY easy guide to rooting this thing. Found here: How to Root Your Droid X Running Android 2.3 Gingerbread (http://www.androidauthority.com/how-to-root-droid-x-running-android-2-3-gingerbread-39804/)

But where I am really hung up is ROMs. For my charge there were 2 main options, and the consensus was that Tweaked was the more stable ROM. It seems that the DX has SEVERAL ROMs to choose from. My girlfriend doesn't do anything crazy with her phone. Messaging/Facebook/Games is pretty much it. I just want a fully functional, very stable and smooth ROM. Any suggestions?

So can you guys pint me in right direction? ( How to Root Your Droid X Running Android 2.3 Gingerbread (http://www.androidauthority.com/how-to-root-droid-x-running-android-2-3-gingerbread-39804/) ) <--- is that right? Or do you guys recommend a different method? (I had no idea what rooting was until 2 days ago)

Unfortunately that root method will not work for system version .621. I'll grab a link for what will.

Here's the link.

http://rootzwiki.com/index.php?/topic/31737-[Root]-Droid-X-root-method-for-2.3.4/-4.5.621-(does-not-require-Milestone-SBF)#entry872214

This is a new root method for the DX running .621. It has been confirmed to work. It is an .ISO file that you burn to CD then boot your PC from the disc. Then it does the work for you. The phone has to be in Bootloader while this is done. You'll also need to make sure you have the latest Motorola drivers on the PC.

And do I need to download and place superuser on the sc card before I do anything?

newmanx4
08-15-2012, 10:56 PM
To put the phone in bootloader:

From a powered off state, press and hold Camera, Volume down, then Power until you see a quick flash on the screen. Let off the buttons and you'll be in bootloader. Screen will be black with white text and will say Bootloader 30.04.

To boot from the disk you'll need to restart the PC and watch for it to tell you what to hit to go to setup. My laptop uses F12 but yours may be different. Google it.

Superuser will be installed during the root process automatically. Nothing to download.

Make sure the battery is at least 80% before you start in case you run into any trouble. If something goes wrong and the phone won't boot don't panic. Its fixable.

Once you're rooted and ready for a ROM there's a whole other set of steps to take to make that happen.

Once its rooted follow these steps. Place the ROM zip on the root of the SD card (meaning not in any folders). Then:

1. Install Droid 2 Bootstrap ($2 in the market but you've got to have it)
2. Install ROM Manager Lite. (Free in the market)
3. Open D2 Bootstrap. Hit Bootstrap Recovery. Close the app.
4. Open ROM Manager. Select Install Latest Clockwork. Should be the top choice. When the device list pops up choose Droid X 2nd init.
5. In ROM Manager choose Reboot Recovery. Phone will boot into Clockwork. Black screen with blue text.
6. Once in Clockwork do a data wipe and cache wipe. Volume keys to navigate, Camera button to execute.
7. Install ROM zip from SD card.
8. Reboot

One thing: Once you've used Bootstrap, NEVER hit Bootstrap Recovery again or you'll be starting from scratch again.

And since this is your girlfriends phone make sure she understands this will erase everything on the phone. You better back up anything you can. You can send contacts to SD and import them back. If they're all synced with Google they'll come back automatically. Same with the calendar.

Are you running Windows? It has a built in ISO burner. Once you've downloaded the ISO just right click it and send to disc. Or you could download a free program named Imageburn to do it with.

Put it in bootloader, plugged it in usb, turned on pc and then it didn't do anything. It IS the Motorola USB :(

Maybe just a recap? My thing is the info I have gathered has been very scattered and bland. I feel like you guys obviously know what you are doing, But are maybe assuming I know more than I do. I don't.

To recap IN DETAIL:

-I Installed drivers.
-I downloaded 'Droid2_D2G_DX_DX2-RootCD-2012.iso'
-I burnt the iso to a disc.
-I went into settings on boot and selected to boot from CD first.
-I made sure USB debugging/3rd party was all good to go.
-I turned off the phone, put it in bootloader, connected it to my PC via Motorola USB.
-I rebooted PC via disc containing iso. I got to the yellow 'Boot, Baby Boot' screen.
-It then goes to a screen asking me to select my device. I select choice 3, Droid X.
-It then goes to the next screen and said:
Starting
Kiling adb etc..
Waiting for device
Daemon not running, Starting now on port 5037
Daemon started successfully

..and then it just sits there. I eventually removed USB, had to manually turn off PC (It didn't freeze, there just wasnt anything to do from where I was at)

Phone is fine. Just not rooted :(

I took .621 and I want to root!

Congratulations, you are lucky as a root method has been confirmed working. This is where it will involve flashing Milestone X firmware (a Milestone X is a generic, non-Verizon Droid X, the have the same hardware). To keep it simple, we are able to flash this firmware because it has the newer CDT/Device Tree that stops us from reverting to earlier versions, but the software is rootable/exploitable. It is also incidentally a newer version of Android. Anyways; essentially what you want to do is flash the .604 SBF via either Linux or a 1KDS ezSBF Live Disc. I will include a link to the manual method via Linux if you want the fairly more difficult path, otherwise just use the 1KDS ezSBF. Both are linked in post two.

The most important point here is this MUST be done via Linux, either manually or the 1KDS ezSBF (which is a custom Linux distro you boot via CD/USB). If you attempt this via RSD Lite, you will flash your radio to a non-Verizon system and lose data and just generally break a bunch of stuff. So DON’T DO IT!

Once you have flashed to the .604 system version you need to root. If you are using the 1KDS ezSBF disc it has a root option that it will provide after you SBF. If you do it manually, the root method that is used is Zergrush v4 (links in 2nd post)

Lol yes, can be put on USB, then just boot your computer from the USB. Remember to take a look at the kernel update after rooting it if you'd like. Links are in the .621 Important Info thread.

I rooted .621 and want to flash something!

Awesome. You can effectively flash ANY Gingerbread-based ROM, however there is some pre-requisites. First, it is recommended you flash the kernel update. When you SBF’d to the .604 Milestone X version you lost your .621 kernel, and are now on the .604 kernel. There is a link to a flashable in the 2nd post. This flash only needs to be done once per SBF (so you can flash other ROMs between SBFs and not need to reflash the kernel) but whenever you SBF you will need to reflash this custom patch.

SUCCESS! :big smile: Thank you all very much! Now I just installed Droid 2 Recovery Bootstrap and looked for ROM Manager Lite but could not find it so I got ROM Toolbox Lite (Is this OK?). I was told that was told that MIUI was very good and planned on going with that. This is my girlfriends phone and I just want something smooth and stable.

Went to install MIUI and it said 'Cant open (bad) installation aborted.'

What should I do?

Now since I have pressed that once, even though I have since then wiped date and cache, should I NEVER press it again? Or will I need to once more?

Used miui on my. 621 for almost a month. Rock solid stable. Still have the zip file. PM me and I'll put it in my drop box if you can't find a good copy. Loved it, the only reason I switched was because I couldn't transparent proxy with it. It is a great rom with a terrific interface (after you get used to not having an app drawer)

Unless you run a SBF, then do not hit the Bootstrap Recovery button again.

Going to flash ROM shortly. Just want to thank EVERYONE who held my hand through this. I apologize for the hassle. Just a few miscommunications here and there due to my inexperience. You guys were great, it was me lol.
