What exactly is a nandroid backup? Can I flash a different rom then use my backup from the other rom on it? Thanks

It makes a back up of your phone. However you have your phone set up now, it makes a exact copy. Lets say you flash a rom and don't like it. You can go back into cwr and do full wipes, restore your nandroid and your phone will restore to how it was prior to flashing new rom.

It's like an "image" of everything.. system rom, apps and data. Even your angry birds scores and successful levels will be there as they were along with call logs, SMS etc, just as it was at the time of your backup.

To my knowledge you can't mix and match. Restoring a nandroid completely everwrites the existing rom. This is unlike a backup of apps and app data such as in titanium or rom toolbox or miui backup utility. A nandroid is one big image file. It can save your hiney so do one prior to trying new roms.
