I desperately need a longer charge cable for my dx. Probably around 6 feet. Will any micro usb cable work? I don't want to overcharge it or over heat it when I leave it plugged up. What tells the charger to start trickle charging when it is fully charged? The phone or the charger? I ask because I know you should stay away from cheap aftermarket car chargers. Does the same apply for home chargers?

Why not use extension cords?

At work we have Nextel phones for direct connect. They come with very long charger cords. May be your solution.

So will any cheap cable work? As I said before, I was worried that a non oem cable could overheat or overcharge the battery. Is the trickle charge in the part that plugs in the wall?

Monoprice is the ONLY place I buy cables anymore. Sure they're not the best quality, but at the low price, I buy like, 5 at a time and they're still decent cables. I've bought multiple 6' cables, all work just great. Here's a 10' (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=5139&seq=1&format=2)

It's in the phone/battery itself, I use generic sub extensions and never had a hot battery from charging.

why do people warn not to use cheap aftermarket car chargers because they will overcharge/heat the battery if it is the battery itself that cuts off the charge?

I tried an el cheapo as a backup but the phone would actually lose battery faster while connected than when I had it unplugged. It was rated high enough to charge the phone. I'm sure I could have found one to work but I didn't want to keep trying them so I've stuck with the verizon charger.

I spliced two chargers together and it works great. Got about 8 feet to play with and the port on my X loves me so much for doing it.

I have the vzw charger that they replaced my oem moto one with and it comes with a 9ft cable but it does not work for sbf or stuff like that even though they said it would but for strictly charging it works great

That looks like the stocker to me except you can't unplug the usb cable from the wall plug. The stock charger that came with your phone will adjust the voltage automatically as well (from 100V to 240V anyway). I use the ones from monoprice without any issue. A 6ft and a 2 or 3 ft. The 6 ft has no file transfer issues and works well with the stock wall charger.

fwiw I tried a blackberry usb cable and transferring files between the computer was like a 14k modem . They are not all built the same!
