The Department of Justice gave its seal of approval to Google’s proposed takeover of U.S. cell-phone maker Motorola Mobility on Monday, just hours after European regulators also gave the deal clearance. The $12.5 billion acquisition positions Google to move into the device market and potentially into more direct competition with companies like Apple.
Google wants to own the hardware to pair with its Android operating system for smartphones, and could use the acquisition to protect patents as well as to develop other devices such as home gaming systems.

“The combination of Google and Motorola Mobility will help supercharge Android,” Google’s Don Harrison said in a blog post earlier in the day. “It will also enhance competition and offer consumers faster innovation, greater choice, and wonderful user experiences.”

The European Union earlier on Monday approved the deal, which still needs the approval of regulators in several other countries, including China, according to Reuters.

Heard this on the radio. Seems an intn'l lock. I'm not holding my breath for an unlocked Moto Nexus-analog. But if it happens on vzw I'll drop everything and get one.

Thanks for the news report!

Although now Apple is sueing Google / Samsung for the galaxy Nexus. They got 4 heavy hitting patents which include slide to unlock and global search. If they get this one then the Nexus will die in the US. Man I hate apple.

So do I. Apple makes me crazy. They're part of the reason I'm.going thru a midlife crisis. Apple needs to accept that they're just not cool anymore and live with it, cuz their making everyone miserable

It's Droidlynn & X, so have a Droid-X-tastic day in a world that doesn't, cuz Droid Does, and iPhone doesn't

This crap pisses me off. There needs to be a judge in charge of BS who has the power to throw out stupid lawsuits like this (and not just from big companies) as well as the power to fine people/corporations who continue to file frivolous lawsuits. Probably should pertain to patents as well. All it does is cost us consumers money whether through taxes or higher priced products or most likely both.

I think I'm going to file a patent for power buttons. Think of all the companies I could sue then.
