Hey everybody.. I'm trying to hack my droid, but I'm pretty new to it.. Could anyone give me some guidance??

First things first, what's your system version? Go into settings > about phone and tell us what you're running.

First, follow this guide.

All you need to root is in that guide..then you can start modifying your phone.

The next steps depends on what you want to do, I suggest also getting a root file explorer (such as Root Explorer or Fileslick), and also get Titanium Backup (this will backup all your apps/app data, which will allow you to keep any progress you had through ROM changes).

shouldn't he use tenfars recovery? I'm a noob too but I was told to tenfars only..

Anything above 2.2.2 Gingerbreak will not root it. You'll need to use Zergrush or Pete's root tool.
