What happens when you root? Do you lose all your contacts? Do you lose your apps? How do you customize your settings?

As cobra stated, rooting doesn't do anything to you phone except for allowing you to do more with it. It allows you access to otherwise restricted system files (think of running a PC in admin mode as opposed to logging in as a guest). From there, you can do a lot of things, including flashing a ROM (a custom version of the android system) which will require you to wipe your phone, but there are apps in the market (which require root access) that will allow you to backup all your apps so you can restore them upon setting up your phone again.

Cool. Thanks. I'm excited about the prospects. I'm running .605. I found a discussion taking about it and a video. The video says that the method will work as long as the it hasn't been "fixed" or something like that.
