View Full Version : Installing roms for a newb

At the risk of being *****ed at for not looking, I have searched and searched these topics and have not found the answers that I was looking for.
I am new to this, but relatively good with computers and such.

I recently got my first android phone, the Droid x2. I choose it over the iPhone due to the versatility of the phone and the community of android lovers:excited:. I got the gingerbread update when it came out and have now rooted the phone. I would like to begin to install roms, but honestly don't know where to start. It seems like I need bootstrapper, But I'm not sure if this works with gingerbread? I also would like to know if there is a way to back up my current rom, as I cannot find a way to do that either. It seems as though I would have to download the rom, save it to the sd card, and open it through recovery somehow? But not before I back up my current rom.. Let me know if I'm on the right track at all..

Looks like I picked the wrong phone to be learning how to do this stuff on lol

first of all have you rooted the phone yet ? if not this is the first step u have to take here is a guide [ROOT] Droid 3 root instructions (One Click added for Windows/ Linux/ OSX) (http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?3714-ROOT-Droid-3-root-instructions-(One-Click-added-for-Windows-Linux-OSX)&p=75934) scroll down to second post that is for the droid x2

once rooted, you have to move roms to your sd card, boot into recovery, make a nandroid back up, and then install.. so with knowing that, you're on the right track. Im not on GB and havent messed with it at all, so i can really give u any advise as to if you can use driod2 bootstrap or not.. what Android Version are you running? Ill do some digging and see if i cant find out some of the answers to your questions, if anything it'll help me better understand the GB kernal

Edit: First of all I was under the impression that you cant be rooted while on the GB kernal, so when u say that you installed the gingerbread update, do you mean the "Gingerbreak" so that youre able to root??

also, here is a thread on droid 2 bootstrap, which is exactly what you need to boot into clockworkmod...

you should also look into getting ROM Manager, especially if you plan on flashing a multitude of roms... it helps keep roms up to date. Here is another thread that may answer some of ur other questions...

have any specific ?'s just ask.. good luck

Yes I have rooted the phone using this link: http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?3714-ROOT-Droid-3-root-instructions-(One-Click-added-for-Windows-Linux-OSX
So I believe I am running a rooted DX2 GB 2.3.3

I have read most of the links that were posted, but I'm confused if the bootstrap/clockwork mod recovery would work on GB?

Thanks for all of your help!

Edit: Also, I do have ROM Manager. Although at this point it is useless lol

The bootstrap clockwork mod recovery does work with the gingerbread update.
