As the title says,

VZW is sending me a replacement DX, but I am wondering whether I will be unable to root it if it arrives with OTA already installed (which I would imagine is reasonably likely).

Thoughts?

Much appreciated in advance.

Absolutely. You can still SBF back to .340 and go through the steps to get back to .596 rooted.

I got a vzw replacement phone last week and it was on froyo.

That was last week though...

If on GB, just sbf back to froyo and root it. Then u can get the rooted GB or whatever u want

brilliant. i was concerned when i saw that OTA wasn't root-able. So they didn't change the bootloader key between froyo and GB? sounds like VZW has given up protecting the DX from rooting. previously, you couldn't SBF back to older builds.
