I picked up a Droid X about a month ago on AmazonWireless for $.01, I had been waiting for the 4G phones, but in the end I decided to stick with the X since it's the highest rated of all the Droid phones and it had all the features I wanted (except 4G). After one month I can say it was the best choice for me. The X2 looks nice, but I would rather wait for what will hopefully be the X3 with LTE in a couple of years.

This mod was about a 1/2 day of effort, but that was moving at a leisurely pace and drinking a few beers while working. I was really surprised at the lack of users taking on this relatively simple mod, after searching online I discovered a few EE's that had done it, but most didn't seem want to figure an easy way to do it. So without further ado, here's the mod.

NOTE: this was done on a Subaru Impreza, however it's pretty much the same for any car that has a 12V outlet, assuming you have the space. It's not a step-by-step manual, but I am including the photos with descriptions.

Charger components and backside of 12V outlet. I used a stock (non-moto) multi-charger.

12V (+/-) connection, this will connect to backside of the 12V outlet.

Nearly completed multi-charger. Wires in foreground will power the car dock. The Red Chair made this project much more enjoyable

Completed charger, ready to be installed.

Completed 12V pass-through. I used a mix of crimp connectors, solder and heat shrink tubing throughout the project.

Wire that leads to up car dock.

Modded charger ready to be tucked into area behind lower console. Note that the blue LED is lit, indicating that I didn't screw up my wiring!

Charger in position (highlighted). It tucked in nicely on my Impreza. It's key to make sure it's fairly secure so you won't get any unwanted rattling while driving.

Wire with connector for car dock (taken from the multi-charger).

Wire leading from car dock down to the modded multi-charger.

Success!

Car dock from the driver's POV. The wire is not visible from my driving position.

Before (with cord) and after (without cord). It looks just a bit cleaner!

End notes and common sense caution:

You're working with wiring and a decent amount of juice so don't shock yourself and make sure you don't cross your +/- during the mod process. The multi-charger I used has a fuse so my phone is protected from over-voltage damage. In the end you could make your own custom circuit board to do this, but why waste the time, unless your really that interested in electronics or if a EE nerd!

I would appreciated any comments and will try to answer any questions regarding this mod.

That's awesome I looked into to doing something similar on a 2005 Honda Accord for and adapter for the headphone jack so I can listen to Pandora and what not but was turned off by the fact that the adapter costs $75 some kind of special connection

Thanks for the praise!

One other benefit to this mod and also having the multimedia dock is that my phone is almost always above 70% charged, in fact I don't think it's ever been below 50%.

Did this back in March :) Used the adapter for the radio that you mentioned and an extra accessory adapter like the one in the first post under the pocket.

Glad to see other docks installed :)
