Progress is progress, even if not yet on Moto.

HTC to not lock Android bootloaders going forward (http://www.bgr.com/2011/05/26/htc-to-unlock-android-bootloaders/)

From BGR:

In a quick statement just published on HTC’s Facebook page, HTC CEO Peter Chou said:

“There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we’ve listened. Today, I’m confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience,” Peter Chou, CEO of HTC

It remains to be seen how the carriers react to this, but still it's refreshing to read.

If they all unlock the carrier's will have no choice. Welcome to the future.

I've never owned a HTC phone, but I certainly think it's a step in the right direction. I need a 2nd smartphone at the moment. This makes me consider TB more, just to give support to a company that is showing some respect. Well, if I can boot up my old BB for a 2nd phone, maybe I won't pull the trigger just yet :)

I like this. HTC puts the burden on the carriers. Perfect!

This makes me consider TB more

Wait till they get the issues worked out. Latest update has people stuck in bootloops.

Ugh. Trying to get a smart phone soon unfortunately. Got the curve back from the dead. Working on the storm now. I'd prefer to stay married though so I'm hoping not to have the wife on bb too long.

If pushed I'm going dx, dx2, or TB. Not sure which at this point.

was going to post this statement, was best to it. so lets hope that this has a greater impact on other manufacturers & carriers even. these companies cannot be as successful as they'd like if they falsely believe they exist in a vacuum etc... we get screwed when one carrier decides to do away with unlimited plans in favor of tieredand others follow, so now lets all hope that just maybe we can benefit by the actions of htc in this regard...

are you listening moto, as I think some people are giving htc devices a much closer look all of a sudden

Yes!! HTC heard the people! It kind of reminds me of "every vote counts"!! If you think about it, there are a lot less computer illiterate people out there now and I think there will be less phone illiterate people as far as development. Someone SMART will listen.

This is wonderful news! Woo hoo!
Moto will have to raise an eyebrow and take note. If not, it'll be pretty quiet in the moto forums in a couple years I predict.

The HTC Facebook page is blowing up over the news. That's a GREAT sign!!!

Even for the 99% of people that run stock, just the news that HTC devices are more open could be a lure.

from a re-tweet I saw this morning it does appear that vzw is paying attention, their response?

they won't allow htc devices with unlocked bootloaders on their network.

FAIL... do I want to go back to sprint (shudder) or even at&t (convulsing... flat lined...)

edit: this ~ RT @phandroid Verizon Support: An HTC Device With an Unlocked Bootloader Cannot Be Activated on Our Network http://bit.ly/lUJYGB

EDIT #2: while I was busy posting doom and gloom...

RT @VZWSupport Correction>> You CAN activate your HTC device with an unlocked bootloader on our network, we apologize for the confusion.

Activating and offering them for sale isn't the same....
