Cskills just dropped his gingerbread root. It's been modified and added to an apk by Chainfire.

NOTE: THIS DOES NOT ROOT THE OTA VERSION OF GINGERBREAD FOR THE DX (4.5.596).

Original thread:
[21.04.2011][v1.0] GingerBreak (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765)

Download:
Gingerbreak v1.2.apk (http://db.tt/yDYPnUu)

To use, just install the apk and run it. This also works on froyo.

Very nice info here snow. If I was on unrooted I would give it a go.

I'm about ready to go, but there are two gingerbreak files, am I pushing gingerbreak or gingerbreak.c and how am I executing the file? If I'm asking these questions, maybe I should just wait lol.

I just found that over at XDA and I thought I might just get the chance to start my very first thread here. Dang.

Hey, figured I'd let you'll know I found a post over at xda where someone made a .apk that uses this exploit. I now successfully have root on .588. I had to rm and mk the directories mentioned on the post but it works! heres the link to the xda posting: [21.04.2011][v1.0] GingerBreak (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765) Happy rooting! Props to Cskills for finding the exploit!

Yes, this will be great if we can use it on the OTA when it comes...

ejgilkey
04-21-2011, 09:14 PM
So are these exploits typically found in the Android code vs. the Manufacturer build? Have we been giving Motorola too much credit for GB being difficult to root?

lifebeginsfriday
04-21-2011, 09:37 PM
By my understanding this is Gingerbread wide. The exploit above is working on multiple manufactures.

Snow02
04-21-2011, 09:55 PM
Correct. But individual manufacturers can patch specific exploits if they wish. Once they know about them, that is. A new exploit should theoretically work on all devices.

lifebeginsfriday
04-21-2011, 10:05 PM
Very true. Now if only there were a way to keep them from finding out about them! Lol.

In case anyone needs any more proof. I can verify that this does work. The app actually returned a "I'm not sure what happened" message right before it rebooted, thought it may have failed, but all is well!

Only if the apk is successful for the user. If not you will need to use adb and the script provided in the OP

Yummy LibertyBread with a side of Superuser :P

If you want to use the apk use adv to remove the mentioned directory then remake it first. Then run the apk works like a charm. I see the op has made a script that does it for you though.

Found this at XDA this morning and came here all excited with the news, guess Snow02 beat me to it.
Another confirmed working: It does work as stated. I didn't use Snow02's script, but I did need to run just the 2 adb commands:
adb shell rmdir /data/local/tmp
adb shell mkdir /data/local/tmp
After that, took less than 5 minutes to be rooted again

Sweet. I added the additional command because rmdir doesn't want to work if there's stuff in there. So it's just in case.

But it does look like it'll be required, so I'll recommend it be done first.

Cskills just dropped his gingerbread root. It's been modified and added to an apk by Chainfire and works for the X. Instructions in the link.

[21.04.2011][v1.0] GingerBreak (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765)

Download the apk (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19045917/GingerBreak-v1.00.apk)

To use, just install the apk and run it.

Before running the app, you'll need to run a couple commands via adb. For those unfamiliar with adb, I made a quick script and included adb with it so you don't need to download the entire android sdk. This runs three commands

adb shell rm /data/local/tmp/*
adb shell rmdir /data/local/tmp
adb shell mkdir /data/local/tmp

This is for windows only. Make sure you have usb debugging turned on and the phone plugged in. Then run script.bat. Reboot the phone and run the app again.

adb Download (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19045917/Gingerbreak.zip)

Snow I downloaded the adb download and it shows there's nothing in the zip.

I would imagine that someone will probably package an apk with these adb commands built in. Then this would be just like Z4Root.

Grabbing Titanium Backup

You should have a "Superuser" app in your app drawer, if you don't download the free Superuser app from the Market and see if it works! Also try using apps from the Market that require root permissions.
It should come clear pretty quick if you are rooted or not.

Snow02

If the superuser app is in your app drawer, and root apps have root access.

Reinstall Ti Bu? Verify you have busybox installed?? (I have no idea if that would be an issue but a total W.A.G)
Try to see if you can boot into D2 Bootstrap maybe?

Updating BusyBox now... we'll see if it works then.

Battery Calibration ran OK, so I am assuming I am rooted.

EDIT: BusyBox update from TB got it working.

EDIT: BusyBox update from TB got it working. ... Sweet.. I totally pulled that one out of a hat. Goes to show a blindfolded guy with enough darts and beer can eventually either hit a bullseye or the bartender. :)

So are we feeling pretty confident then Gingerbreak is going to be our "Z4" for the little bread man? Looks promising.

Snow02

You can use this to root gingerbread if you happened to install the unrooted version. If you install the pre-rooted version from team black hat, you have no need for this. Either way, you get the same end result.

Sounds like Gingerbreak will be a short lived fix. Google is patching the exploit. Doubt the fix will be included in the official GB OTA, but sounds like it will be in place by the time they release Ice Cream Sandwich.

Also, didn't z4root install busybox? Maybe that could be added to the apk.

Edit: actually looked at his phone today and it was running 2.2.2 and gingerbreak still worked even though z4root wouldn't work on his OG Droid. Weird and cool at the same time.

2Part is pre-rooted as cory46 stated, to check to see if you are rooted, see if you have the "Superuser" app in your app drawer. You can also download the free app "Root Checker" from the Market to see if you are properly rooted, if you are not, then you had bad files or a bad install, restart the process and try again.

But like we said, the 2Part is pre-rooted.

OTA installed Gingerbread is not rootable. As for the desire, you might wanna check out the appropriate forums for your phone for root method. With the DROID X, if the OTA was installed, we have means of flashing back to the previous build, rooting, and installing a pre-rooted version of the update, only because of our bootloader versions staying the same. So I would check out the forums for the Desire.
