I currently have an original droid that is rooted, and super easy to change roms, just donwload to sd root, rename update.zip boot to recovery and install. I am looking at a droid X that is used. The seller I am meeting in a bit has already rooted the device he says "I used the bluetooth/wifi toggle exploit that came out awhile back. I'm using birdman's FlyX with the latest ClockworkMod Recovery"

I shouldnt have any issues with a new rom correct? He says installing a rom is very similar to how I do it now. Just want to confirm or find out if there is a better way of doing it.

Well if it has clockwork on it you don't have to rename any files. Just "install zip from sd" > scroll to the zip that contains the rom you want to flash and select. Just don't forget to data/cache wipe first.

Id read through some of the guides on rooting and flashing a rom on the x before doing too much. They are quite helpful and will diminish the chance of anything horrible happening.

I take no responsibility for what you do with your phone.

You will just have to make sure that you are using a ROM for the correct software version...most of the new ROMs coming out are for 2.3.340 and can only be used if your phone had the most current update. If he rooted and never upgraded to 2.2.3 (I think was the last update), you cannot use the most current ROMs...however, there is a file on the forum called Maderstcok which is flashable thru CW and will bring you to the most current update (hopefully, someone will jump in and confirm what I have said :))...

Once updated, yes - you install ROMs like you described - make sure they are on the root of the SD card and either rename to update.zip to install or install via select file from SD card.

Welcome to the forum...ask questions as ya have them and participate when ya can!!

Look up Bootstrap for the Droid X...you'll need it to flash anything on the X.

baseband BP_C_01.09.06P
Kernel 2.6.32.9-gfb07887

That's a VERY old version, so obviously the owner never took the OTA updates...You cannot use the maderstcok.zip with this system version.

Hold on and I'll check something...

You need to activate the service first, then check if you can get an OTA update..

Personally not knowing everything except what the seller told you I would do a full SBF to 2.3.340. That way you are 100% fresh and ready to take any future updates.

Seems like the smartest way to go. Never been a huge fan of work arounds and the like. I'll go to stock then activate the phone then root and install liberty most likely.

mikeinrichmond

I'd still see if you can get an OTA update first, if so you won't need to go through the SBF process, which can be arduous..

I've never had issues with sbf on my droid, is the droid x different?

No, if you've done it before you are ahead of the game. The only issue is that your system version is the original one, never updated. Does it say what Android version you are on? Is it 2.1 or 2.2?

You going to do it through Windows or Linux? Make sure you have the latest Moto drivers and RSDlite for Windows, or the file sbf_flash for Linux...

The RS guy 1KDS has link's on his site to all the files you'll need. Here's the site:

Make sure you're running RSD as an Administrator if you're on a Window box, some folks overlook that

Good, see if you can take the OTA update, if not we'll try again as PP suggests..

Are you sure you wouldn't like to try an OTA update first? With that Bootloader, you may have to SBF a couple of different files...

mikeinrichmond
03-14-2011, 08:46 PM
Congrats!!!

Now once you get it rooted and get Bootstrap back, make a 'clean' backup of your phone before doing anything else. That way if something happens when you are trying Rom's & Themes, you always have a good backup to return to...

Use z4 root. There's Dl links in the hack section. Dl right from your phone.

Make sure you make a clean backup of your stock phone before flashing Liberty. That way if something goes awry, you can just flash your backup and try again.

Also make a backup of stock Liberty, so that if a theme causes trouble you can flash back to stock Liberty without having to go all the way back to stock..

Glad everything worked out well!!

I'm just glad it all worked out.

If anyone has a similar issue in the future, here is what i did

Installed Motorola drivers
Installed RSD Lite 4.8
Used the most recent full sbf

Booted to the bootloader and installed the sbf
rooted
installed bootstrap
backed up stock settings
updated bootloader
installed liberty 1.5
