It literally takes 2 minutes. Stickied in the hacking forum, there's a root download called z4root. Just download it. Its an app. Open it and hit the button that says permanent root. The phone reboots and you're done.

There is no need to pay anyone. Its very simple. Follow the above given advice. Z4root is a simple and effective app. Worst case scenario search it on YouTube to see it actually done. That's what I did when I was too nervous to install customer roms.

Z4root is great but there are some tricks to it but if you have one of these guys talking you through it you will be fine. Its just a matter of doing it in the right order and to know its not a big deal if you have to try a second time. Many if us had to . Good luck.

1. Menu Button > Settings > Applications > check unknown sources > Development > check USB debugging
2. Download and install Z4 root (http://db.tt/DtGoJp2)
3. Menu Button > Settings > Wireless & Networks > check airplane mode
4. Battery pull (physically remove the battery and put it back in)
5. Boot up
6. Wait for it to fully boot up and scan your sdcard before unlocking the lock screen
7. App drawer > z4root > permanent root > wait for it... it will auautomatically reboot.
8. Make a nandroid backup;

Follow the instructions in the video link in my signature and you can't go wrong. That will be $20 (if it makes you feel better).

That being said. If you are that worried about rooting why do you want to do it? There are a lot of people that are perfectly happy with an un-rooted phone.

I was hoping you would post that sequence Wug. LOL. I saw that battery trick posted yesterday on another thread just after I had to do a second attempt with z4root after using maderstcock zip. I now have it bookmarked for the next time.

@ToeJamm57 +1 You should be comfortable with the info before using it. The DX is a great phone without root!!!

I tried to manually root my phone about twenty times to no avail when I first got it...countless "one-click root" windows programs that turn out to not work for Droid X or are just fake. I heard abouts Z4 Root Mod, downloaded it, and I was surprised there is not about fifty other apps just like it.
