Infectious Grooves. Suicidal Tendencies meets Steven Perkins- literally. Punk-funk irreverence. Early rock-rap type stuff mixed in.

Self. Pop-ish music isn't bad if it's this good. Tons of free stuff at selfies.com.

June of '44. Math rock before such a term exsisted. If 4/4 kills you this is what will rock your world. Not like some of the new guys who just try to do something different.

Shellac. 'Nuff said.

Fantomas. Mike Patton, Buzz Ozborne, Dave Lombardo... all-stars of OMG!!!

You just named most bands I grew up listening to! You left out Tomahawk on the patton bands though
Recent good ones are :
Dirty fillthy mugs
Murder by death
Not recent but can't leave out the reverend horton heat.

I left out many Patton bands! Just picked something wild and fun. Your first two I'll check out. And the Rev! Yeah that's the stuff! I'll be seeding more bands here and there.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. "I don't play the blues. I play... ROCK AND ROLL!"

I hear you there. Post Black Album Metallica, I just shrug my shoulders. They were one of my favorites prior to that. I don't know if the change is more them or me.

Here's some old stuff. The Outnumbered made three albums in the late '80s that I liked. I thought they deserved to make it bigger than they did. Some of their stuff can be found on youtube, as well as videos of a reunion concert just a couple years ago. The Unforgiven made one untitled album in the late '80s and I thought they also deserved to make it and didn't. This album was rereleased on CD a few years back and is still available.

I would say MOST metal bands would fall into this catagory. Sure many people can name a Metallica song or two but I can't think of any other "major" metal band that "most" people have heard of sufficiently that they could name a song or even recognize them if you played them.

Now a newer metal band from one of the gazillion genres that have evolved in the past 10-15 years... yeah, I'd say they fall into this thread :)

spodoc

Folks (especially PP): I kinda stopped listening to newer metal with the 1992-1994 wave of records that Metallica, megadeath, overkill, etc. put out. Was dissapointed. Punk was getting big and I always liked it from my skate days. Tried to listen to newer metal when HBB 2.0 started up but honestly every band sounded the same so I didn't keep up.

So catch me up to speed with what I've missed since then. I'm aware of recent releases of older bands, but what's a good place to start now? Does everyone still scream so low they are trying to give themselves throat cancer? FYI, my favorite stuff is pre 92 Metallica (e.g. ride the lightning), megadeath (e.g. rust in peace), overkill (horrorscope),... point me in a good direction :)

I'm sure you've heard of Tool(which is the best band evar), Corrosion of Conformity, maybe Clutch or other long running bands. If you want some recent metal that doesn't sound like cookie monster vocals, you could try Mastodon. They have a really good sound, and mix it up a lot throughout their albums. Judging from your previously posted bands, I think you would enjoy them.

You could also give Opeth a shot. They have made a strong surge to my top 5 bands ever list lately. They tend to play really long songs, over 10 minutes a piece, but the music is constantly changing. The vocalist, Mikael, has a really great singing voice, but he does head to the death metal growl at certain times in songs. Not for the whole song, just when the music can handle it. Overall, an amazing band, one you should give a listen to.

Hope this helps. ;)

I distinctly remember a turning point when Vulger Display of Power came out. It was like after that, if you were ANY metal band, you had to scream and rumble louder than the next. I'm not trying to be like a Matt Pinfield and act like I know everything and know why, who, and what of metal... don't mean to come across that way.

I just miss when there were a lot of variety of bands that sing. There probably still are, you just have to sift through a lot to find them, hence my request :)

I understand completely; and lol on the Matt Pinfield reference. Ahh, the days when Mtv actually played music.

There are a ton of bands that probably fall into the prog-metal category (you know metal and it's genres) that you would like. Try Symphony X for one. Give 'Serpent's Kiss' a listen, and let me know what you think.

They certainly were mainstream at one point. I'm not sure of the OP's motives on thread. And I'm not above hijacking a thread anyway ;) But what I like about it is that I'm hearing about music I don't know about. It is plausible that a youngster reading this has never listened to AIC. Word is PP has an extensive metal collection, so maybe he'll chime in too. Re your comment about screaming/DM voice when the music can handle it, I've always thought it was a good effect. Ok this may be off the time period but i am older. there was a band of session musicians called "Stuff" who played out of New York in the 60 70 & 80. Thay were: Cornell Dupree on guitar, Gordon Edwards on bass, Steve Gadd on drums, Chris Parker on drums, Richard Tee on keyboards, & Eric Gale on guitar. They played on some of the most memorable albums of that time. playing with in part or hole: Ray Charles, Grover Washington, George Harrison, Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, Joe Cocker, Tom Scott, Steely Dan, Quincy Jones to name a few. Some of the band have passed but Steve Gadd is still out there, "and i stopped counting" about 2000 albums he has played on. They were UNBLIEVABLE!

Bungle was scheduled to play a show on that reunion tour with Primus in Mexico, but Les's nephew had some health issues and Primus pulled out. I was ready to buy tickets when the news came out. Would've been monumental. (I've seen Les 27 times in one project or another).

Blind Guardian, topic metal. Most of their songs are based off of JRR Tolkein books, another of my loves (see avi lol).

Also Demons & Wizards which is a sudo super group. The frontman from Blind Guardian and the guitarists from Iced Earth. They have a sweet album called " touched by the crimson king" based off Steven Kings Dark Tower series.

How about some dubstep? There are countless artists in the Techno and dubstep world. I'm sure there will be some on this list someone hasn't heard of :P I'll also place my favorite song by each in parentheses next to the artists

Skrillex (Reptile's Theme)
Doctor P (Gargoyle)
Euro Trance (Plasma)
Sphongle (Nothing Is Something Worth Doing)
N-Type (Chest Boxing)
Robotsonics (The Comedown)
Bassnectar (Timestretch)
The Glitch Mob (Drive It Like You Stole It)
Electrixx (Tetris)
Bar9 (Strung Out)
Funtcase (So Vexed)
Chrispy (Roll Out)
Flux Pavilion (Got 2 Know)
Lifeseeker (Gone Guru)

And that is all I can think of off the top of my head. If I turned on my laptop I could slap you with an endless list of mind-blowing techno, trance, or dubstep. lol.

Disc 1 w/ anthrax, megadeth, and slayer was epic. Disc2 with Metallica was good to but I tell ya I just think they have sounded a bit cheesy live after their self titled album. Sheesh, you don't have to add a "yeah," "sa," or "o-u-o...wah" after every line. I just found myself chucking on occasion watching it.

I saw them in March '92 in Greensboro. I actually had front row tickets, left side (first three seats) of the arrowhead stage. I was right in front of a bass amp: Every time Jason Newstead plucked a string, it was like I was standing in a hurricane for all the wind blowing around my jeans. Then I saw them again that summer at Walnut Creek Amphitheater in Raleigh. Instead of being solo, they had Metal Church with them and the total show ended up being about 5 hours between the two bands. Then I saw them again in Charlotte in '94 with Suicidal Tendencies. We were out on the lawn watching it in the middle of a HUGE thunderstorm.

I've been to other concerts since, but not Metallica. The last time they came around (Death Magnetic), the ticket prices were so ridiculous ($75 for nosebleeders), I said to heck with it. I refuse to pay that much.

It was a great show but I was deafened afterwards. I'd taken ear plugs but they somehow fell out in the parking lot so I spent 5 hours totally unprotected with 150 dB sound levels. My ears rang for days. I had custom ear plugs made a few days later that I've worn to every show since. I even use them to mow the lawn.

I laughed about my ears ringing at the time, but looking back, having no earplus was extra stoopid. (misspelling intentional)

With them semi-back in form on Death Magnetic (although, thanks to Rick Rubin being the producer, they sounded a bit Slayer-ish), I might consider a free show, but no way I'll pay today's ticket prices.

St. Anger? You couldn't have taken me to see that show for free. That album was a tee-total POS: Only rhythm guitar, no solos or melody to the songs and Lars sounded like he was beating on a metal chair instead of a snare drum. Thank the gods of metal that Bob Rock decided to retire.

Yeah ticket prices are outrageous anymore. There were several shows we wanted to see this summer, The Big Four Tour, Soundgarden, Motley Crue, Def Leppard/Heart, Rockstar Chaos and Rockstar Mayhem, but $75+ ticket prices kept us from going. I will admit I paid $100 for tickets to see Metallica on the Death Magnetic Tour and would prolly pay that much now if they were touring again.

Yeah they seem to play only a few US dates on their tours anymore. Last year I think they only played like 5 east coast dates. Closest to us was Homdel NJ which is over 3 hours. We did see the Somewhere Back in Time Tour in 2008. That was an awesome show and a great flashback to my very first (and second) concert. I think I have seen Maiden 8 times total over the years.
