I would like to reserve this thread for my rooting explorations tonight and any future questions! I'm traveling and could really use the Hack Hot Spot. Hopefully I can get it all done while things are slow at work. :big smile:
Now to go searching for the threads I need...where did they go.

They're in the RS guides section. You should find everything you need right there.

You should have a Superuser app in your app drawer.

Haha. The first rooted backup is very important if you run into any problems. Are you going for a custom rom?

Intimdtr77
02-16-2011, 12:56 AM
does it matter that I am plugged into a pc?

maybish
02-16-2011, 12:58 AM
correct me if im wrong but i dont think so....you dont have to be connected to use clockwork.

Intimdtr77
02-16-2011, 01:02 AM
I'm still trying to figure out what a ROM is..lol

The back up went good, I think, I rebooted and I must say, I have seen an increase in speed. Much faster.
Doing Titanium thing next.

Intimdtr77
02-16-2011, 01:03 AM
free or pay?

maybish
02-16-2011, 01:06 AM
well you can back up your apps and app data in the free version but to restore them youd have to do it one by one. the paid version does it all for you in super fast speed and doesnt take long. you also have the option of letting the market restore all your apps but without data, so youd have to start your apps from scratch. sometimes apps will let you backup the info onto sd card. thats what i use mostly.

Intimdtr77
02-16-2011, 01:07 AM
so it's worth the 5 bills then...???

maybish
02-16-2011, 01:13 AM
thats totally up to you! it is a pain in the ass to try to do them all one by one, especially if you have 200-300 something apps...its a pretty helpful app to have.

Titanium Backup is one of my fav apps ever! Worth it IMO

Intimdtr77

Droid-Xer
02-16-2011, 01:24 AM
Must have root apps IMO

1. Droid X bootstrap $2- full system/data/cache backup
2. Titanium Backup ~$5 app+data backup, freeze unwanted bloatware
3. Root Explorer ~$3- move system files
4. Cache Cleaner free- on the cache wipe
5. Ad Free free- no ads in ad supported apps
6. DroCap free- for screenshots
7. Quick Boot free- fast rebooting
8. QuickClock Advanced $2.49- overclock/undervolt
9. Wireless Tether free- create a mobile hotspot

Droid-Xer
02-16-2011, 01:25 AM
The dev will send you an email with a key and instructions for tibu

Intimdtr77
02-16-2011, 01:29 AM
have tibu and the pro key, tried the batch mode thing and got an error message

Droid-Xer
02-16-2011, 01:35 AM
Did you put the key on the root of your sd? I think you still do that, I bought the app awhile ago. Someone correct me...

I use every one of those except Cache Cleaner, Add Free, and Quick Boot. But I'm dl'ing quick boot now!!! These are very worthwhile apps imo.

Droid-Xer
02-16-2011, 01:48 AM
In the email from the dev there's instructions on how to get TiBU started. And yes bigtincan makes ad free

Intimdtr77

DrivetheGreen66

I have used both the 3G Hotspot Hack and Wireless Tether. The 3G Hotspot does better on my phone for some reason.

Droid-Xer
02-16-2011, 02:06 AM
Ya the wireless tether works better for me than 3g hotspot hack. They are basically the same so whatever works for ya.

That's a good odd prime number. Btw when you do a restore avoid restoring system apps. Only do user apps+data

Intimdtr77
02-16-2011, 02:32 AM
ok, so everything is backed up in case i screw things up, right?

So, now what do I do? Can i get rid of apps I don't use to save battery etc? Ideas?

Droid-Xer
02-16-2011, 02:34 AM
Yes, long press an app and freeze it. There's a list of apps to freeze. I'll look for it or im.sure someone will post it.

I got it for you there Xer.

DO NOT REMOVE or RENAME:
Verizon Backup Assistant
Blur Files (corp directory, files, voice commands, etc) until we get a 2.2 SBF File. Note: An SBF file is a full copy of the OS and everything and will make your phone like new again. You CANNOT use the SBF from 2.1 on your OTA 2.2 phone you will "brick" it.

Safe to RENAME:
Amazon Mp3
City ID
Skype
MyVerizon
CarDock
Kindle
Blockbuster
NFS (you can actually delete this without root or anything just a regular app)
Verizon Visual Voicemail (if you remove this it WILL disable the Voicemail button on your dialer)
HelpCenter
3G Mobile Hotspot (mynet.apk)

Android Live Wallpapers
eMail and Gmail (if you use another mail program like K9)

So, how do I get this liberty I have heard so much about? What about other ROM's?

mikeinrichmond
02-16-2011, 04:26 AM
Here's the main area for Roms, look at the sticky sections:

Droid X ROMs (http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-roms/)

And make sure that you know how to use Bootstrap and make a backup before flashing any Rom's..Here's Xer's great guide on the subject:

http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-hacking-guides/13485-how-use-droid-x-bootstrap.html

Intimdtr77

uh oh...did something trying to do a ROM. The phone shut down and now it appears everything was factory reset. Was that when I did the formatting etc.

Droid-Xer
02-16-2011, 05:06 AM
Yes. When u wipe data it wipes.ur.user.info. just open the market and it autodownload your apps. Then you can use TiBU to restore data if you need to.

Intimdtr77
02-16-2011, 05:41 AM
OK, looks like everything is back. Thank god you guys have stickies for this stuff! I'm going to have to hold off on this ROM thing until I figure out what I did wrong. Kinda gave me the jitters there....

In TiBU hit menu key, batch, restore user apps with data. Did hou wipe data/cache in clockwork before installing the rom?

I can't remember, probably not, knowing me. lol I'll give it another shot sometime.

Next question. I have the Wireless Tether App now, I have it set up, encryption, renamed etc my questions are:
1. how do I know when someone is on my wifi I felt the vibrate notifying me that my laptop connected, but other then that, I had no clue it was connected.
A. How can I give them Das Boot once connected?
2. Is there a way or app for tethered wifi?

You guys rock. I made it through with only minor issues that were handled easily because, for once, I FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS posted here. I did my back ups. If I can give any users considering root advice, it's this; follow the directions provided here verbatim. Do the back ups, spend the extra $10 or so for the proper back ups and things will be fine!

If you encrypted it then they can only access if they have the password. Itll vibrate and you can pull down the status bar and see who is connected i think

There is no way to give them the boot though, huh?

ETA: tethered use?

edit: I didnt see anything, but then again as long as its encrypted you're fine.
