Because when an uneducated user jacks up their phone, they go running and crying go VZW, att, sprint, etc wanting a new $500+ phone for free. They do it to protect themselves from consumers.

They don't want you to root your phone for several reasons.

1. If you are an average user and you root your phone you are much more likely to brick it which means you will call them up for a new one.

2. Rooting allows several new and free features such as wireless tether and no throttling which "hurt" the phone companies.

With that all said if you found this forum and are able to follow basic instructions then you should have no problems rooting. The benefits greatly out weigh the very unlikely risks.

EDIT: Droid-xer best me to it :)
