Why do people do this? Does it use alot of ram or something? Does it increase performance of is it just for looks?

I don't know about performance but since I already have a clock displayed via beautiful widgets. So it was a matter of looks. Seeing two clocks annoyed me.

+4, I use a Minimal text clock widget on the homescreen, no need for the one in the notifications bar...

I think system resource use is quite minimal - it is more for looks for me as well...
