XOOM ! WTF! as soon as this mo ficka gets rooted I'm getting it. My only question is... Can I make a phone call with it? Oh my god I think I'm in love. There's no way I'll be able to get one without getting one for my girl. I don't think I can sleep now.

Not impressed. They could have put way more RAM in it. Or at least ddr3. And they are only using a 5mp cammera in the back and a 2mp on the front... the droidX has a better cammera.

Everything else about it is amazing.. but the lack of RAM makes it lame to me. I will say however, that the battery life is really impressive.

It still could have been so much better.. the technology is out there.. they're just not using it.

I'm waiting for xoom2

You dont mod hardware, you mod software. You mean you're gonna buy a brand new tablet and then open it up and try to add different hardware to it?. LOL!!! What are you talking about?

Can anyone else agree that it sucks waiting around for technology to come to us. Isn't that why we rooted our phones in the first place. Where's the forum for the guys that make all this stuff? I wonder what the hell they're up to. Can you imagine?

AZLuvV, although I understand what you're trying to say, I think you have a misunderstanding of how things work regarding computer technology. The problem isn't making a powerful device, it's making a powerful device thats also sleek, solid, portable and marketable. In order to achieve that, companies need to build custom tailored hardware, specialize screens and sturdy yet aesthetically pleasing encasing. They then have to bundle all that together into one solid product and hopefully be able to produce it for cheap enough that they can make a profit. Thats the challenge, and thats why compromises have to be made; therefore as consumers we don't always get what we want. Although the top of line technology of today is available and would make these devices better, it doesn't necessarily mean that its in the companies best interest to include it, because its too expensive and they still need to make a profit while also delivering a product with a reasonable/marketable retail price.

Building a super computer really isn't that hard: you buy the best components, a power supply and a motherboard and then piece it together, its no different then legos (well, kinda.. lol). But packaging all that into one portable sleek device is something completely different and requires a whole team of people working together to make the final product. And on top of that they have to factor in price.

No matter how intelligent, no one individual can build a xoom tablet from scratch... because it requires. highly specialised parts. For this reason modifying one would defeat the purpose of buying a premade machine. Your not just buying the individual hardware pieces.. your buying a finalized product, a singular unit of everything packaged together. Furthermore your buying a product which is backed by a company who will release software updates which will be specifically designed for the hardware in your device. So making hardware modifications to a xoom tablet not only would be impossible to do without ruining the exterior (because any new hardware you would try and incorporate wouldn't physically fit) but it also would make your device incompatible with software updates.

You asked the question "where are all the people who make this stuff?" They're the engineers who work for companies like motorala and develop devices like the xoom.

*Sorry if I came off as being mean the first time I wrote this.

Not sure about that but as an Apple bigot I was 100% impressed with the Xoom. We will see whose pant are wet when the iPad 2 comes out. ;)

As of Jan 6th 2011 Apples ONE phone has a market share equal to ALL android phones.
To add, the only reason I do not have an iPhone is AT&T. There are many many many did I say many people like me.

+1, never would have even tried a Droid if I hadn't gotten so frustrated w/ATT. The iPhone is a great product, esp. when Jailbroken. Now that I'm use to the X, I can't imagine going back to a phone with such a small display. Now if the iPhone 5/whatever comes out with a 4.3"screen and dual core processors w/LTE on Verizon by May '12 (upgrade time) Id seriously consider it.

To add, the only reason I do not have an iPhone is AT&T. There are many many many did I say many people like me.

Apples current market share in the mobile phone industry has very little to do with their products (although they are admittedly pretty good) and everything to do with their brand loyalty and superior marketing strategy. Plus it also has a lot to do with the fact that they are innovators and practically initiated the smart phone movement with the release of the original iPhone, so its not fair to compare them to the droids (regarding market share) since they are fairly new on the scene. But head to toe, product to product, I like these android devices way more.

Why? Because I like android os way more than iOS4. I hate apples proprietary bs and all these mac fanboys. I like the direction android is going, I feel like I have more control over the os and am not trapped by apples bubbley GUI. I also really like widgets. However the one thing I will say, is that being a materials engineer myself, I can really appreciate apples hardware. Those new devices are something else.. particularly the materials they used for the case.

As android improves I just like droids more and more. As iOS4 improves my opinion about these bubbley overly simplified iPhones remains. I just hope they start releasing android on devices with better hardware, and it looks like they are with Bionic... but its going to take some serious engineering to catch up with apples hardware development.

Either way, I chose based on os first and then comparable hardware seccond, and for these reasons (plus my inner mac hatred) I choose these droids over an iPhone any day.

The iPhone is just as locked down as your Droid X is brother. Both can be "rooted". Apple does not want the user interface to be forked off which is what some people are actually starting to complain about in the Android community. Also Android is not THAT open. Steve Jobs knows it (http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2010/10/steve-jobs-on-androids-fragmentation.html) and so do developers (http://www.businessinsider.com/android-open-apple-joe-hewitt-2010-10). Open your eyes a bit.

Bubbly GUI? Funny Windows 7 has done all but copy it lol. Dude, you should really actually USE a Mac before spewing such nonsense ;)

I agree with all the things your saying. I know that android isn't so open, I know that windows tries to copy macs gui (hense the epic failure that is vista), and I know you can root iPhones. But we are not taking about windows vs mac. We are talking about android vs iOS4 with an added bias of my dislike towards macs. : )

I like android better. And I am phrasing that as a personal preference, not a fact that its better. I even admitted in my previous post that I like iPhones hardware; thats as far as I will go. I hate their os, I'm sorry. I've used macs and it made me want to barf; I have owned a rooted iPhone and liked it, until I got the DROIDX and liked it a million times more.

I dislike apple
I like android
(Note that said "I", and that I refrained from the word "hate"... although I snuck it in earlier)

What else do you want from me?
Your not going to get me to buy a mac or an iPhone. Not in this lifetime.

Oh I LOVE APPLE but do dig the Android platform better. The current iOS is not for me. (The wife another story)

I was actually VERY surprised that when I got my Droid when I plugged it in it "just worked" no drivers or anything.

Wug... Understood. You can't just walk into the oem department at frys electronics and buy parts for a cellular handset just like you can't for a laptop. But just think. We already have 8 mp cams on the x. How hard would it be to gut out the camera (i know that sounds like blasphemy here) and interface it with another device?

Also, if the technology is out there, is it at all possible to purchase components to build a device? If the case is so, I guarantee someone out there is playing frankenstein already.

I know that, like you said, xoom is huge and it looks like they could've fit more ram in it. And I understand that if the motherboard (is it still called a motherboard?) Doesn't sport it it just isn't possible. I'm the guy who asks "what if?". Shoot, my step brother was building circuit boards when he was 8 to do all kinds of things.

Okay I'm rambling now. I gotta catch up on some sleep.

True, you can always play frankenstein. I guess my point was that anyone who is actually talented at doing such would most probably be doing it for a living; and working for a company designing new devices.

But yeah. Nothing is impossible. It could be done, its just doesn't seem as practical to me as waiting for the device you want to purchase considering the development rate is so fast for these electronic companies.

Just cause you gave me so much **** about modding hardware... ;)

This guy build his own tablet from scratch! You don't have to wait around for someone to manufacture the next best thing and its not as expensive as youd think.
