Jan. 05, 2011

LAS VEGAS and BASKING RIDGE, N.J. – Verizon Wireless and Motorola Mobility, Inc. (NYSE: MMI), today unveiled DROID™ BIONIC, a powerful new Android™ smartphone.

Packing a dual core processor with each core running at 1GHz, delivering up to two GHz of processing power, and 512 MB RAM, the sleekly designed DROID BIONIC smartphone with 4G LTE delivers a mobile Internet experience that's up to 10 times faster than 3G. This means consumers can stream their favorite music and the latest TV shows with unparalleled quality experience. DROID BIONIC also races through loading of complex web pages and media that take advantage of Adobe® Flash® Player and HTML5, rendering graphics faster than previous generation single-core devices.

Motorola's DROID BIONIC gives new meaning to the word "socialize" by delivering multiple ways for customers to stay connected. With the device's front-facing VGA camera and See What I See video feature, consumers can share experiences – either via Wi-Fi or 4G – with family, friends and co-workers. A rear-facing 8-megapixel camera also allows consumers to capture their favorite pictures and videos.

DROID BIONIC's multiplayer gaming capabilities allow consumers to challenge friends to live peer-to-peer gaming, viewed through the device's 4.3-inch qHD quality screen that delivers console-quality graphics. DROID BIONIC's HDMI connectivity also enables consumers to connect the device to their HD televisions to experience their favorite games, as well as purchased HD content, in full 1080p. And for multi-taskers, DROID 4G's Mirror Mode function enables simultaneous streaming of video to the TV and on the device.

As a fully featured work device, DROID BIONIC comes equipped with corporate email, remote wipe and data security and encryption capabilities IT departments appreciate. DROID BIONIC also features productivity tools such as Quickoffice® for document review and editing, full calendar management, one-click access to conference calling, and a full suite of Google applications and services.

"DROID BIONIC brings to life the speed and power of Verizon's 4G LTE network, giving consumers an unrivaled mobile experience," said Marni Walden, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. "Whether downloading movies in minutes, connecting with friends or co-workers through video conferencing, or blazing through the Internet, Motorola's DROID BIONIC is what the 4G LTE experience is all about."

"DROID BIONIC is the epitome of speed, providing consumers with instantaneous access to their personal and work content, anytime and anyplace," said Alain Mutricy, senior vice president of portfolio and device product management, Motorola Mobility. "By combining such a powerful mobile device with the performance and capabilities of Verizon's 4G LTE network, we're empowering consumers to define how they want to live their mobile lifestyles."

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network, launched in December 2010, is the fastest, most advanced 4G network in the United States, providing speeds up to 10 times faster than Verizon Wireless' 3G network. Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network currently reaches one-third of all Americans, with plans to expand the network to the company's entire 3G coverage area over the next three years.

Let's hope the battery life/memory management has been improved.

I still think it's "sad" that the Verizon guys recommend a 3rd party App (Advanced Task Killer) as a "solution"...but I digress ..

New phone sounds awesome.

Considering the fact that the Motorola Atrix which was just announced today for AT&T has 1GB, I'd put my money on the same for the Bionic.

So with all these 4G LTE Phones coming out, will a 4G plan be a requirement? Because $50/month for limited data is pretty much enough to make me not want one, however much I hate to say it.

All these people ready to trade out their DXs right now for this are going to be without a phone for quite a little while. It isn't planned to come out until anywhere between April and June, lol. It is quite nice looking, though. Once Verizon gets rid of the NE2 early upgrades, though... I will have to wait until May 2012 for something so, I most likely won't be touching this one.

Well, I consider that getting rid of because I have always been used to shortly after a year. I have never waited almost 2 years for a new phone, never want to either. I did say getting rid of the NE2 early upgrade, didn't I? If not, I must have left that morsel out.

The evolution is going to go like this:

Droid X/Droid 2/Droid Inc - OMG these amazing Droid phones for 3G! I'm gonna jump on in!
HTC Thunderbolt/Droid Bionic - OMG what the hell how dare verizon sell us these phones in July when announcing NEW 4G ANDROID PHONES 7 MONTHS LATER?!
Next Gen 4G aka more than just Dual Core, 4G-Tuner Enabled versions of the existing 3G Devices - OMG how dare verizon make us jump all over these early 4G models just to release new, better ones 7 months later!

I think you can tell how the pattern goes. Stop being mad at Verizon because you bought something. 7 months ago isn't "just the other day" and if you bought it "just two weeks ago," last I checked 14 days wasn't over 30 days... do we expect verizon to say, "No, you know what? In fairness to Droid X owners, we're not going to release new phones for an entire calendar year!"

C'mon now...

According to phone arena... whose spec reporting i trust more than a news clippy...

Motorola DROID BIONIC is one of the first Android handsets to rock Verizon's 4G LTE network. It comes with a 4.3 inch qHD (540 x 960) display and has a dual-core processor which will run at 1GHz, while 512MB of DDR2 RAM will make this phone tick. An 8 megapixel camera with HD video capabilities and a front-facing camera will make video calling a breeze. Entertainment is well covered with Adobe Flash and HTML 5 support, as well as with HDMI output to your large screen TV.

....

on a side note i'm now imagining Dance Dance Revolution 2 powering this phone.

I agree. I think those pricing plans for 4G they have are for the USB cards (?) and not for a 4G LTE phones. That would be crazy insane amount to spend, and I certainly will not jump on the 4G bandwagon if they do price it that way. Sprint was only $10 extra a month when I had the EVO.

HTC, LG and Samsung where all there. Considering it seems the Droid series of devices are Verizon's flagship devices, I'm disappointed that they did not have more presence in the show. I was expecting a really good show, along the lines of "DroidDoes 4G LTE", but instead was presented with "Oh and here is the Droid Bionic and the Xoom Tablet, by Motorola"... Um really? That's it?

No.. That isn't how it works.. It doesn't double the speed.. It has two cores at 1 ghz it is only 1 ghz. It will perform better than a 1ghz single core yes.. If this were true then nasa wants to borrow my computer.. Quad core at 3.6ghz.. That doesn't mean it's 14.6ghz. Rather it has more cores to share the work load.. If one engine in a car going 60mph hour @ 2500rpms mean 2 engines at same speed/rpm mean its going 120mph? No, but if all other parts of vehicle allow it it can carry twice the payload. Same with a computer, it can just handle more with less stress.. You really wont even see a huge diiference until applications are multicore compatible.

Hopefully that helps explain it some. If it were true y arent advertisers advertising quad core 1ghz computers as 4ghz? They arent.

Phones like this I dont really ever see much of an end to.. depending on how u look at it.. My old blackberry storm is now my yr old sons phone.. Yeah no service.. shut all the towers off, wish I could delete them. I just load movies on it for him and he loves to take pics/movies with it. My phone before that became a chew toy for a 1 yr old.. Really depends on how you look at it.. Phone before BB storm was a nextel motorola 880, not much fun. These phones can live on forever just not as intended to be used.

edit.. 5yr old son.. damn 5 key is sticking!!

I agree with you on both parts. Except that I wont be buying the bionic simply because of motoblur and the fact that we probably wont be able to get a custom kernel up on there. Also not getting it because i'm waiting for a QWERTY motorola slider that is 4G. Perhaps the Droid 3? :D.

Hacking and development is only a small part of the android and VZW customer base. A good majority of D1, D2, DX, DI owners are that because they either saw the really cool commercials, their local VZW rep convinced them they needed a smart phone, or they saw a friends/family members. Those types of people keep their phones for 2+ years. They aren't worried about the next best thing because they are still trying to figure out how to use and are enjoying their current best thing.

That infuriates me. I would pay extra money for it to be unlocked. Its bs.. these aren't phones.. they are computers. What's the justification for it? What are they afraid of? You should just be able to get a dev/hacker version and have to pay more.. or sign some warranty void agreement..

"Droid" is a brand naming done originally to denote a phone running the Android OS.. Problem is, it's been trademarked by Mr Star Wars himself George Lucas, so using the name means hefty royalties to Lucasfilms. Doesn't mean much at all.. It's the difference between a Droid Incredible or just HTC Incredible. Motorola could have easilly called the new phone the Motorola Bionic. To the 'outsiders' in the market, the message that it's a serious top-line android OS smartphone might possibly be lost. HTC is a bit more willing to take the chance I'm gathering while Motorola is willing to shell for the "Droid" naming for brand recognition of the OS running.

On the new Bionic... Yeehaw soft keys instead of hard keys for the menu buttons. It was the one thing compared to my wife's Incredible that I absotively possilutely hated about my X and didn't realize when I got the two phones. Good job Motorola on that one itty bitty feature, listening to a few consumers. Opinions may vary. Mine is softkeys are nice. Hardkeys slow me down big-time. That whole hand shift to go from tap to press is a PITA.

Let's just say it: you're never going to find a phone that is top of the line or receives regular upgrades for the full 2 years of your contract. device hopping after a few months because one is slightly (and I do mean slightly) better is really a great way to waste money... but i don't know that it's the smartest move. The only exception that always receives upgrades during a 2-year period is the iphone line. They receive upgrades for a few years until devices like the iphone 2G don't get the full features of iOS 4,while the 3GS kinda does. Oh, I don't think there is any doubt that 4G coverage will cost more than the $30 extra we pay already. The only question is will it be $10 more like Sprint, or $20, $30, >, and for how much data?, 5gb, 10gb? I don't see any possiblilty that they will have an unlimited data option unless it's > $50 more..

I'm a little bummed I didn't wait either, I got my droid X like two months ago. Then a 4g commercial came out like two weeks later, I debated returning it. Anyways, glad I didn't. I learned so much rooting, OC'ing, roms, themes, etc. Which is what I will want to do with any android phone I will get. I'm sure it will take a few months to get the hack community up and going on the new 4g phones. Plus I think $30 extra a month for unlimited 3g is way too much.....so I couldn't imagine paying more for a capped 4g plan.

I will wait until things are old news in 4g in a year or so. Or if it is just so amazing that I can't do without it and the deals are good, I will use the upgrade of one of the 4 people on my family plan who couldn't care less about a smarthphone and give my DX to my wife.

Oh well, at any rate, I just hope the hack community for the DX doesn't slow down because of the new wave of 4G stuff.

Yeah this whole new upgrade policy is confusing. The way I read it at first is that if you don't do an annual upgrade before the 16th you lose it. Apparently this is for people who renew or sign up after the 16th. My annual upgrade was valid on 12/26 and my NE2 will be this coming December. After that I will have no more. Let's talk about it:

Droid 2, Droid X, Droid Incredible (and a few others, i'm sure) are all seeing end of life on 3/11/11. That means there will be 3+ open shelves on the Verizon showroom floors.

I wonder when those new phones will come out... HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

C'mon guys. Critical thinking isn't that difficult. Connect those dots... ;)

So basically, anything PhoneArena or anywhere reputable has scheduled as "Q1 2011" - Just go ahead and write "March" in your head since we know nothing's out before then.

Anything that says "Q2 2011" (Bionic) will be shortly thereafter. As much as it'd be nice to see the Bionic get a summer release like the Droid X, I don't think they're going to announce it in January and release it in July.

I think one design flaw (on the Thunderbolt) is the placement of the charging port right under the kickstand. So it is pretty much impossible to have it charging or hooked to your PC while using the kickstand.

Based on available info now, I think I would take the Droid Bionic for my next smartphone. It seems to have the most to offer when compared with the other announced 4G LTE phones. I must say that my interest meter did perk up over the weekend when I first heard about the 1/11/11 11:11 press conference. All intel is pointing to a CDMA iPhone for Verizon. I'd likely pass since it's not really going to offer anything new, since a new model will most likely be out in early summer.

So with all these 4G LTE Phones coming out, will a 4G plan be a requirement? Because $50/month for limited data is pretty much enough to make me not want one, however much I hate to say it.

Uh yea people aren't considering the cost of going 4g per MONTH with data. It will have a SIM card for a new technology, if it goes back to 3G when 4G isn't available I wonder if 4G will just be an add on, but you can be sure it will be expensive. $49.99 sounds like the right price for the lowest amount of data in terms of being capped off too...

Dominick_7

Personally I could care less about 4g. I'm more than happy with 3g. That being said, this phone is exactly what I want. I can't stand the "real" buttons on the X. I'll be paying full price lol.

Why do you not like the real buttons on the DX? My friends with Evos really don't like the non real keys on the Evo because they easily get accidentally pushed just by putting it in the case or bumping up against them. The real keys on the Droid X are something I love in comparison to touch keys the other phones.

Dominick_7

anyone seen the HTC Thunderbolt yet? RoOoleR gave me this link earlier.. HTC ThunderBolt (http://www.htc.com/us/products/thunderbolt-verizon?extcid=Thunderbolt-Device-Disp#tech-specs)
This might not have a locked bootloader, has more RAM and comes with 32GB of storage... only drawback it's not dual core but I'm sure it's plenty fast

I like how it looks, it's screen is beautiful, it's responsive, has 32GB Micro SD AND 16GBs of internal storage (48GBs), nice wide EVOish screen for bigger keys/easier typing, 700 some MBs of memory, very nice loud speakers, kickstand, but unlike the EVO no HDMI out, and unlike the Bionic no dual core, no ddr2 ram, and no 1080i out/playback.

Droid Bionic release date: Q2 2011 (April - June)
Droid X End of Life (pulled from shelves) - March 11, 2011.

Why do people always assume, "no, this phone I bought is the one verizon will NEVER stop selling!"? lol... this phone will be gone before the bionic hits... if only by a few days, or a few weeks... but these will not be on the shelf side-by-side.

That's just not accurate. Like mentioned, 4G will NOT be available to everyone, Droid X is the best selling phone, and it takes a while for them not only to meet their release goals (ie they said 1st quarter for the Thunderbolt, now it's 2nd Q, which means likely beginning of 3rd quarter), but also to get rid of an EOL phone.. many times EOL becomes 1 1/2 years. The Imagio was STILL on there just a few months ago. Now they're also selling refurbished versions of these phones.

As of now, it's still all speculation, but just make sure you do your research and don't jump in to a new phone too quickly...

this phone would be announced two weeks after i switch to a droid X. lol. why couldnt my BB have lasted just a few months longer?

Take advantage of VZW 30 day return policy..Granted you'll pay a restocking fee...Hey at least you'll have the sikkest device out..

@Garemlin

Word around the campfire is this may sport vanilla android and an unlocked bootloader. Purely speculation so don't kill the messenger if it is blurred up and locked down.

I SOOOO doubt it!

but it would be nice!

No, you can't blame at&t. You can the cost of implementing a new technology. And a company trying to make money. You would do the same thing in their situation...you can't operate, maintain, and improve without money. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to pay for it either, especially not that much. But to have a premium service, you pay a premium price. Simple as that.

Sometime in Q2. More towards the end so I would say right around Memorial Day.

All of this is good, and honestly 90% of it goes over my head, but I'm looking for something I miss from Blackberry. I thought it was simple to throw in there, but maybe not? Multi-language support. Right now we've got English and Spanish, but I'm looking for more additions, specifically French.

Check out the volume hack if you haven't already if you find the call volume is too low.

That is just a quality hack I believe. I have already done that, but the volume is just so low. I won't trash the phone over it though. Overall it is awesome.
