z4root does not work for Gingerbread (4.5.596 / 4.5.602 / 4.5.605 / 4.5.621) if you need to root those versions look here (http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/gingerbread-development-hacking/35634-gb-602-root-start-here-links-all.html) edit 2-25-12 - 1KDS

When I downloaded and installed the new OTA update (2.3.340) I lost root. I used the Z4root version 1.3 to root before. It's still on my phone. Is that the version that will root the phone now, after the new OTA update, or do I need to download a newer version. Thanks.

Mind saying what to do with the apk file? I just did the update. It did fix the HDMI hang up glitch, but I am having problems re rooting. First two time went OK, but old way isn't working. Tried Root x 2.2 but get hung up. Like to try z4, dwnldd the apk, then what? Heck why does Verizon have to keep removing root rights for us. Titanium BU requires it.

What 1KDS said is how you need to do it if you download it from and directly to your phone.
If you're using PC, download it to your desktop, plug phone to pc via "usb storage"
then drag and drop file to the root of your SD, once transferred set usb connection back to "charge only"
then use "File manager" and click "phone files" find the z4root 1.3.0 apk and install

Some people need to install temp root first to get root then use permanent. It just depends on the phone.

Thanks for that, it worked. I did seem to get a screen hang but went and toggled bluetooth and either that worked or I only needed to exit the screen. That's what seemed to work when I was using SDK to do my first root on 2.1.

Re. the HDMI freeze up, this patch seems to clear up that problem. If anyone is deciding whether or not to bother with the patch that seems reason enough.

I saw some other methods but they require typing all the stuff out and seem a little more risk for a mistake, I don't understand why I have to loose root with every update,
I went in and changed all my bloatware back to Apk from bak befreo the update, sounds like I needed to do something with the superuser before I downloaded the new update.
Now without file explorer I can mode nothing.

wicked
12-21-2010, 04:08 PM
hmm looks like you've tried everything, all I can say is keep trying it until it works?

take battery out and leave it out for about a minute
restart phone, turn "usb debugging on"
fire up z4 and root, try as many times as needed by following these steps

it's weird how some have this issue, for me it only took 1 time and I was rooted...

you can try VISIONary (http://www.mediafire.com/?2hxlpjxd9fpkxd2), it worked for me on 2.2, not sure if it's working for 2.2.1, I used z4 after the update and it rooted in 20 seconds.

If all else fails, .sbf depending on your bootloader version and start clean. Update to the android version you want and root from there. Guaranteed to work flawlessly.

if you have rooted before the update and haven't moved su, busybox and superuser you may have trouble with oneclick rooting.
if this is the case for you you can try this:
Multiple phones - Root them, unroot them - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum (http://www.droidforums.net/forum/rescue-squad-guides/80208-multiple-phones-root-them-unroot-them.html)
worked great for me
as long as you dont mind typing into a terminal emulator.
z4 wasn't working at all, but said it had rooted ... after i used the link above i was completely rooted.

Don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but kaspersky identifies the mirrored files of Z4root download links as containing expoit.linux.lotor.g virus

I know many perfectly valid files are identified as virus and I'm not accusing anyone of installing a virus in a file. But I think an explanation from the developer would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

It's a false positive, some AVs delete part of the file aswell thus giving some users the "parsing error"

out of nearly 5,000 total downloads you're the first person who has had this issue
at least the 1st one to speak of it...

I myself use NOD32 which is one of the best Anti Virus programs out there if not the best and I don't get the false positive
(I don't want to start an Anti Virus program debate here)

It's quite normal for a "hack" app/program to show up as a virus on any platform

root=hack

and thank you...

I'm confused. when I click on the links for z4 I download and then go to open it and it tells me that the file can't be opened and do i want to search the web to find a program to open it. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm reading up on RoOoLeR's guide to rooting, but it seems that I'm missing something. This is almost like reading a new language and it's overwhelming. I want to root for two main reasons....wifi hotspot and to be able to take a screen shot on my phone. anything else will wait until I know what I'm doing.

Can someone tell me what I need to do?

Are you opening it from your PC or your phone?
You will need to either download it to your phone or move it there from your PC and then install.

If you download it from your PC, plug in phone to pc and then pull down your status bar and click on "usb connections" and set it to "usb mass storage"
once the sd card is mounted drag and drop the z4root 1.3.0 apk to the root of your SD card
once transferred pull down your status bar again, click on usb connections and set it to "charge only"

wait about 10 seconds for the SD card to mount then open up File manager called "File" found in your app drawer once open click on "Phone Files" and scroll down to bottom and find the z4root 1.3.0 apk click and install

Hi there, new to the Droid X coming over from the iPhone. I downloaded the z4 root, but I'm not sure if I did it correctly. I have the Superuser app in my dock, but all it has showing is the root program as being in there. What exactly can I do if I've done this correctly?

Is you see the superuser app that means you're rooted. Go to the market and download and install Quickboot and then run it.
You should see superuserapp asking for root permissions for Quickboot, this should confirm that you're rooted.

I just got my X 2 weeks ago, and have been researching things ever since. I just signed up for this forum a few days ago and have been looking in to rooting my X ever since. I got the Z4 app and it took less than 5 minutes to complete the process. Now I'm in the middle of installing the Droid X Forum app!! Thanks for all the help, I'm sure I will be back to learn more about my X!!

z4root is currently not on the market and you won't find it on Appbrain either, how are you showing an update for it?
Did you originally get it from the market or download it from one of the links I provided in the first post?
Which version do you have?

If you're rooted already why would you even need to update? The app runs once when you first open it to root. Runs once when you open it to unroot.

There is no need to install it on custom roms because you already have root permissions. You only need z4 on your sd card for future use after an .sbf flash back to stock motoblur android.

You can use wireless tether and barnacle from the market for hotspot. They work on any rooted phone. Make a backup using droid x bootstrap. The how to is in my signature.

I have updated to latest OTA. Previously I was rooted with SuperOneClick. After OTA update, I tried SuperOneClick, no go. Z4Root, no go. Tried using the terminal version, no go. I have since not tried Z4Root about 15x now and still nothing. Can not get it to Temp or Perma root. I uninstalled it and busybox(busybox was installed for previous rooting), and nothing. Sometimes it goes on for 5 mins and sometimes upto 20 then just locks phone up. Reboot, try again. Turned off Realtime scanning from antivirus. No taskkillers running. Not sure what else may be intercepting it if anything at all. Any other suggestions? Had no problem from the OTA update back in Sept, so I am at a loss for the moment. Thank you for your time.

ok so i downloaded z4root.. that's the first step.. now I need to make sure I have all the following steps down.. I just want to use real hdmi and 3g hotspot. So my next step would be to use titanium to back up everything or do i use bootstrap for that? are they the same, both back up apps, right? after that I really don't need to do anything, right? when a new update comes in from verizon, then what do i do? do i have to unroot to take the ota then reroot and use the the backup file? this is the reason i haven't rooted yet, i'm just not 100% on what I need to do and when so that I don't mess something up! then I may want new themes down the road.. does this make sense, do I have the essentials to root?

You get parsing errors due to your antivirus detecting it as malware. When you download apks, its best to do it on the phone so no antivirus interferes.

sierra
01-02-2011, 12:27 AM
I folllowed these steps and it completed without problems. It did take a few minutes to complete

How to backup your system
1. Click on Droid X Bootstrap app
2. Click Bootstrap Recovery, then click OK when it says Success
3. Click Reboot Recovery, phone will automatically reboot
4. Once in the black screen with green writing, you will use the side volume rockers to move up and down and then the camera hard key to select.
5. Move down to backup/restore and select it.
6. Move to Backup and select it
The phone will begin to create a full backup (nandroid) of your system, data, and cache. This will take about 5 minutes to generate. After it is finished it will take you back to the main screen. If you want to move back to previous screens use the back hard key.
7. Select reboot system now.
8. You can view your backups in your file manager. There will be a clockworkmod folder where the backups reside. You can change the name of the file, but do not use spaces or odd characters. For example, use a dash - rather than a backslash / for dates.

1KDS

Then you're set, you have a complete system backup stored on your sd card. If you want you can hook it up to your computer and save a copy of it there or rename it something that you remember like 1-1-11Stock or something like that, don't use any spaces or odd characters in the name. You can also rename it with a file manager like astro, it will be in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup

Ok. Sounds like a good idea. I'll copy it to my computer. If I want to rename it on the sd card.. how do I do that?

So i dont have to unfreeze what I had frozen?

1KDS

If the apps were frozen when you made the backup I would unfreeze/thaw them and back up again. You can rename them with a file manager like Astro, free in market

sierra
01-02-2011, 12:37 AM
No. I froze them after I did the backup. Is freezing them enough or do I need to rename them too?

Oh, and I would like to set up the wifi hotspot...but in looking at those directions...I'm confused. :( Or maybe I cant do that yet.... just not sure of the order I need to do things to not screw up.

just freezing the unwanted apps is good enough, I was talking about renaming the backup files so you know which one's which if you have to restore one. As far as tethering goes, check out wireless tether, free app in the market.

sierra

Ok.. downloaded it, and installed it. It says its connected, but how do I know that? I am running my computer with home wifi and it seems I am still using the same connection. Do I need to make changes in the set up for the app...or does it just do what it needs to do?

sorry for the stupid questions, but I appreciate your help very much. :)

Got it to connect with easy tether, after unchecking the debug option.

So, is the rooted version the same as easy tether? I thought it was wireless........but again... I'm sure I'm missing something.

Yes. I have it connected now so I can see the phone dir on the computer. I am looking for the backup I did so I can rename it so I remember it, but I dont see the sd card. Is it listed under a different name of some sort? I see lots of folders and a few files outside of folders, but nothing that says sd card or similar.

Oh, and I am connected via easy tether, not wireless tether. How do I change that?

if you see a bunch of folders that means you are in your SD card already... if you need to find a backup it will be in clockwordmod/backup

to change your connection from easy tether to wireless tether just close easy tether app and open up Wireless tether and press "start tethering"

Oh ok. To see whats on your sd you need to connect your phone to hour pc via usher cable. Easy tether/wireless tether/ etc only turn your phone into a hotspot. You can't access your sd through this only by connecting your usb. You can rename files directly on your phone. Go to your file manager and click on the clockwork mod folder and then backups.

Hahaha...ok if you want wireless tether to work, download the app, then open it, hit the wifi icon in the middle of the screen and it will turn green, then your pc should see it. To encrypt hit the menu hard key before turning on the wifi and set it up in the settings.

I'm new to the forum, and brand new to Android for just less than a week. Now, I downloaded the Z4 file straight to my DX, which is running 2.2.1. At first, I got the spinning circle of doom, and I rebooted and started z4 again. It worked, BUT, my phone rebooted and is stuck on the animated Droid logo!

Is this normal? It's been 10 minutes now. Is it safe to reboot?

I really didn't want to brick it, and I'm afraid I did something wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated right now.

Thanks!

Steps I performed:

Downloaded z4 from megaupload.
Installed.
Ran z4, but got spinning circle.
Rebooted DX.
Ran z4 again, went through the motions. Rebooted phone automatically.
Now stuck at the red Droid eye Logo. It's not frozen, it's just doing that animation it does when it boots up. But it's been doing that animation for over 10 minutes now.

Try placing the phone in airplane mode and then running z4root. Idk why but it works everytime on my phone.

In TiBU, hit the menu key and go to batch to backup all apps at once. You shouldn't have deleted anything, just used TiBU to freeze apps. Not a big deal, just an extra step u have to do when u need to update. You will have to reinstall all removed apps prior to updating.

I did the same thing. I was at work and it was already 4AM when I did mine.. I was so tired that I missed your post.
My DX is about 2wks old. I believe I removed Amazon MP3, Blockbuster, Kindle, NFS, and I think some NFL if I'm can remember.
I think I'd have to go to the Verizon store and check out a DX with the same version as mine.

Do you remember if there's some kind of NFL there?

Also if you just want to backup your apps, maybe appbrain if you haven't tried it yet?

This here: Default Apps (http://www.chadhaney.com/droidXDefault/) doesn't have kindle, nfs, "nfl" ..so it's probably not 100% accurate, but I've read that NFS shift can be deleted by non root so maybe that's why it's not in the list? Same with that NFL stuff?

Thanks.

You get parsing errors due to your antivirus detecting it as malware. When you download apks, its best to do it on the phone so no antivirus interferes.

Correct, but some people download files on their PC and that AV detects it as malware. If you download on your phone and you get parsing errors then try using a third party browser like Skyfire to download the file.

Well, I can only say that this forum is nothing but amazing. In the two days since I have discovered it, I have rooted my phone, installed bootstrap and renamed the file, and am now installing titanium. Big thumbs up to all of you that have posted everything needed to do this. It is incredible what you can learn here if you put the time into searching out and reading what’s here. I plan to give everyone who posted big THANKS.

For me, I have a Droid X I purchased on 12/18/2010. I used the Z4 app and it worked like a charm. I was unable to load it from my phone even using a 3rd party browser. I therefore downloaded (megaupload website) it onto my Windows 7 PC (disable antivirus) and then transferred it onto the file on my Droid in the folder labeled downloads after I selected USB mass storage. Then I used Astro app I got from market and found the z4 file. I then followed the instructions and after 4 minutes, it rebooted and everything worked. I can only say I have never been more nervous but felt confident after everything I had read.

Then I downloaded bootstrap using the instructions on this forum and renamed the file and it worked like a charm. I then proceeded to load titanium. Now it is on to future endeavors. I can only say thanks to everyone for their help.:)

I can only say thanks to everyone for their help.:)

glad to hear it! :)

I was wondering if those apps that were deleted can be reinstalled from the Market...

follow this guide to reinstall system apps http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-rs-guides/13386-how-reinstall-deleted-system-apps-bloatware.html

Thanks Wicked. I've read it and I think it's quite simple and doable. (replied on that thread)
I was just thinking if it's possible to re-install the apps that I deleted using the market since they are available from there. If not, it's np.
Also I have synched my apps from phone to online and I can synch back to phone easily. (Kind of like ipod-itunes)
The apps that I deleted are online (Kindle, Amazon Mp3, NFL Madden, NFS, Blockbuster) and I think it's possible to just synch them back to phone? I can't think of an issue.
Please advise.

Thanks.

not too sure if you can download and install those bloatware from the market, you can certainly give it a try and see if it works

may I ask why you want those apps back?
