View Full Version : FYI: Root WILL BE LOST when taking an OTA update

rjizle4shizl

Can you update without losing root?

Or will you need to un-root, update, then re-root?
__________________________________________________ _______________
EDIT (since i merged them wrong)

I see too many posts so im gonna leave this stickied for a while.

You will lose root when taking any VZW update. the current exploits should work but i suggest unrooting first (seems to have less problems rerooting)

also, anyone that removed/froze system apps: the OTA will NOT install without them back in place and with the proper permissions. reinstall/defrost them before installing the update.

Fell free to ask any questions here.

You don't need to unroot, just do the update when it comes and you will most likely just lose root and would have to reroot.

this is a good question. I have stock 2.2 with z4root. I used titanium to freeze some bloat. Can i just unfreeze bloat and take update? Wonder if z4root will work after update?

That is my worry also. I used 1 click root. Titanium back up. Bootstrapper. Rom manager. Wireless tether. I have done numerous backups with titanium and bootstrapper.

Will these stay on the phone after the update? Or will I need to install them again?

Any backups on any app are saved on the SD card. The update will wipe the phone not the SD. And chances are you will lose root on the ota.

So, is the update worth it?

I'm using Touchdown for Corporate Email, Beautiful Widgets for weather updates, and I am usually on vibrate so silent ringer is not an issue.

That seems to be the biggest "updates" that you get. Are there any other benefits?

you HAVE to have all system apps for the OTA to work. it will fail if they arent all there.

That means we must unfreeze the stock apps with Titanium Backup prior to installing the update, right?

Then re-root? Then use Titanium Backup to re-install all of my apps and freeze the bloat?

You can't update to 2.3. Its nit available for the x. Should merge with original gingerbread thread.

Steps:
1. un freeze the bloatware
2. Install lame not gingerbread update
3. Be sad because its not gingerbread and you lost root
4. Figure out how to re root
5. Freeze all old bloatware and the "highly anticipated" NEW bloatware
6. Still be sad because its not gingerbread

Or, you can get one of the custom ROM's like Tranquility 3.5.1 (which is based on 2.3.340) or Fission 2.3.x (right now its 2.3.0 with 2.3.320 as its core). I gave us on the Blur crap ROM that Moto gave us and I found both Fission and Tranquility are very fast, very responsive and don't hang.

For those who are still unclear...say "hypothetically" i was part of the "Droid X Soak" test group and they sent out the update to a select amount of people last night/early this morning.

I am rooted & running the latest version of Fabo's ApeX ROM which doesn't have all of the MOTO Blur components...that update DID make it to my phone. "Hypothetically"...I am holding off on it for now bc I don't want to goto my office and be distracted all day about finding ways to root and get back to where I was this morning.

Okay, so how do I install the OTA if I have Bootstrap recovery loaded? It keeps failing.

I have not removed any bloatware. The only thing I have done is a custom boot logo and custom boot animation. Do I have to set them both back to stock first?

UPDATE--- I figured it out. I had De-Odexed my files. I had to Odex them back and then the update installed.

You don't have to unroot or worry about bootstrap and clockwork. If you are stock otherwise all you have to do is defrost bloatware and update should work. You will lose root but z4 root fixes that easily.

Okay.... I did lose my root when I received the update. But it took me like 2min. to root after. I did not have to uninstal and re-download, however, there are some people who are having issues with root not working after update when using z4. For this I recommend uninstalling and re-downloading.

ok, this will sound silly but I hope someone can help. My system version reads 2.3.20 and Android version reads 2.2.1 but I can't remember how I got there. I've been playing around with various roms for so long that I don't remember ever doing an ota update, but that doesn't mean I didn't - I just don't remember.

When the time comes ( Gingerbread) to ota update how do I know which sbf to use to prepare?

I'm currently using Rubix Focused 1.86, no theme, only black bar mod.

I was previously rooted via Sil3ntKi11 and had frozen a veritable smorgasboard of apps with Titanium Backup. Before updating, I unfroze all the apps, then downloaded the update.....and of course, lost root. I tried to re-root again via Sil3ntKi11 many times, without success. Downloaded z4root and tried to permanent root...waited, waited....finally froze up on me. Pulled the battery, then tried again.....worked like a charm!

I don't run a custom ROM, but find the ability to freeze apps, as well as using Wireless Tether, invaluable. Maybe someday I'll try a ROM, but for now I'm good.

Hey all...I have a similar problem. I have had my DX since launch day and I rooted it with Sil3ntKi11's Root X 2.2. That worked perfectly until the update to 2.2.1. I then couldn't get z4rooot to work. It looks like it roots, restarts the phone, but the phone isn't rooted. I have tried to wipe the phone back to factory settings, but still no luck. It still has the icon for SuperUser on it, but it's just a black screen in the app when opened. I have also tried rooting and unrooting from Sil3ntKi11's program, but it locks up and no success. I have tried multiple battery pulls, with no success. Any thoughts or anyone who had the same problem? Thank you in advance for helping me from my situation!

I took the most recent OTA update without first unrooting and it worked fine, though I did lose root. I then attempted to reroot using z4root without unrooting and was not able to get a successful root. To be clear, I need to unfreeze bloat using Titanium back up, then return the framework-res.apk file to its original state? (I changed the lock screen text a long time ago). After the update takes, I need to re-root using z4root?

I just hate making mods without being extra clear on the steps to take. Thanks in advance for the help.

Install the zip as a regular zip file through bootstrap. You should do this before you unroot and remove bootstrap. Its easier to just use the phone to download. It will be saves in your SD card under download in your file manager.

Do I need to download that zip file to my computer first then transfer to to my sd card? Then what about removing bootstrap? I looked at the link listed above and it was not clear to me how to remove it?

Nothing, the update will only be successful on a stock phone either rooted or unrooted.

In order to get the updates. If you aren't stock you can't get updates which is why its important to make backups of your stock setup. If you can't get back to stock in your backup then you will have to SBF.

Some z4 tricks that might help:
1. Turn airplane mode on first
2. Temporary root first before doing a permanent root.
3. If it fails reboot
4. If at first you don't succeed, try, try, and try again.

@KevenW
You will get it. Next time you get temporary root don't post an update on the forum, just go ahead and do permanent root diectly afterwards.

*Airplane mode might help.
*Toggling bluetooth might help
*Unistalling z4, clearing cache and then reinstalling z4 might help.

I experienced some stalls when I first tried but when it finally worked it went pretty quick. Approx 2 minutes for temp root, and 2 min before permanent root initiated my DROIDX to reboot.

Good luck. And remember, use the force.

Yeah. USB bugging should be enabled.

Did u try all the suggestions I mentioned.. reinstalling it... ect.

You should be doing alot of rebooting.. i feel like your trying to be too careful.. you should have tried way more than three times.. if you think its stalling.. **** it. Battery pull and try again. Nothing bad is gonna happen.. either you get root or don't. Just **** with it until it works. Try a bunch of times.

Like reboot and the first thing you do is z4 temp root, permanent root.

For real, you have to remove bootstrapper..?
I didn't have to when I updated. is that just because I selected Flash ClockworkMod Recovery from Clockwork ROM manager so it doesn't go into bootstrapper at every boot (only from a battery pull, or from selecting bootstrap recovery from the DROIDX Bootstrapper app)?

Or will you need to un-root, update, then re-root?
__________________________________________________ _______________
EDIT (since i merged them wrong)

I see too many posts so im gonna leave this stickied for a while.

You will lose root when taking any VZW update. the current exploits should work but i suggest unrooting first (seems to have less problems rerooting)

also, anyone that removed/froze system apps: the OTA will NOT install without them back in place and with the proper permissions. reinstall/defrost them before installing the update.

Fell free to ask any questions here.
