im trying to make a back up of current rom with ROM manager. Whem I hit back up the screen goes black, then i see for a second a little droid bot with a triangle above him the triangle gets an exclamation point in it, then screen goes black, the motorola M comes on, then the phone reboots. No back up is made. Any ideas as to why I cant make a back up? I have the free version of ROM manager.

thats stock recovery. you need the bootstrap app here:
My Brain Hurts (http://www.koushikdutta.com/)

install it, click the first button, then the second one to reboot.

What do u mean stock recovery? So I can't use rom manager to make back ups? I thought it was the preferred method.

even with ROM manager you still need Droid X bootstrap to make/restore backups
look here

ROM manager makes it easier to make/restore backups though IMO
