View Full Version : Verizon starts their 4G ad campaigns... looking good

One thing I've loved about Verizon has been their marketing campaigns. The Droid ads in particular have been good, high tech and full of the message that you get more for your dollar with their lineup. Conversely, the Apple campaigns have been simple and more 'elitist' to me. Whatever floats your boat, but my personal opinion has been that Verizon has done a better job.

Let's hope that their kick off of their LTE/4G Network will do the same. This first commercial is an "OK" start, but I think they can do better. Verizon should start rolling out 4G service en masse in December. I'll keep my fingers crossed that my local area is one of the early upgrade areas.

Those were my same thoughts as well, what will happen no 4G for any devices that don't support 4G?

By the time they get it up and running in enough locations I'll be ready for a new phone anyway.

Could someone explain to me the basic differences between 3G and 4G? Is the only difference how fast things load on the internet?

Yea probably like going from 3g to close to WiFi.

Depends on what 4G phones they got, I might change phones!

I've heard that you'll be able to surf the net and talk on the phone. Like you can on AT&T.

Besides from data while calling, I doubt we will be able to tell a huge difference in speed. Browsing the web and doing email and facebook while in good 3g is identical to my wifi speed 95% of the time. The difference isn't going to be that substantial.

I've seen 4g speeds over 10MB/s on my buddy's Epic. That's alot, compared to the 3g speed I see. On WiFi, I get anywhere between 13-19, depending on where I am in the house.

I feel like the 4g speeds will be bottlenecked a bit by androids browser and processor speeds. Tethering, on the other hand, will show a much bigger difference.

I spoke with VZW customer support this afternoon and they do not currently have any 4G compatible phones, by the end of the year there will be mobile broadband devices with 4G for your laptop first and they are expecting to roll out 4G phones by mid 2011. He even hinted at possible early upgrades for those of us who don't want to wait almost 2 years to upgrade from the DX but I wouldn't get too excited about that.

Rochester NY is in the first round. We are the smallest city to get it on the first round, according to the VZ rep the local TV news interviewed. Yes we are close to Buffalo, if you can call the Bills a football team this year.

I've been out of the loop for a few months.
Are there any solid 4g Android phones headed our way?

By the time it gets my way, I'll be able to get a free/discounted phone.

Pretty sure they won't leave their flagship phone DX on the docks when 4g comes out, and the 4g speeds will have significant changes in tether ability. 4g in the dx is a simple matter of an upgrade. But will we ever see the upgrade on time, or even in our rooted phones? ? Is up to speculation.

I remember when I first rooted my X, the screen that came up right before you rooted showed that the X was a 4g phone. I will try and find the youtube video I used which showed it being a 4g phone.

If this is the case wouldn't it have been in the specs through its certification?

are you guys saying that the X has 4G LTE capabilities built-in? that a software update is all that is needed? I was assuming that because the 4G LTE network is going to run on the 700 MHz spectrum, that somehow it would have to be a change in hardware...

Yes and I would be will to bet the first 4G phone out the door will be the new iPhone.

The DX is a 3G device, it will never be a 4G device, it's not just software upgrades.

The 4G modem is launching in the next few days.

Wow, you are very mis-informed. The X is not, nor will it ever be a 4G phone. It's not anything an "update" could add. Unless Verizon could somehow physically transport new radio hardware with an OTA update.

I say the masterminds get together, get a test DX, open it up and solder some 4G radio hardware in!
You like apples? How you like them apples?

I think the upgrade thing might be possible if they are just showing the usable specs according to the service provider. But, that is unlikely. Still leaves room for thought though...
